MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Responsibilities

1. Clinical nursing services 

  • Deliver nursing services to clients using a evidence based and trauma informed approach, and in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Assist the GPs with procedures and collaborate closely with GPs on care of clients e.g. follow up and referrals and assist in the case management of clients
  • Actively promote and book Health Checks and TCA/GPMP’s consistent with set criteria as per clinical guidelines
  • Participate in chronic disease management, follow up and care planning of clients with case managers
  • Perform routine pathology tests, screening and other duties such as ABI, foot checks, spirometry and ECGs etc
  • Manage wound care consistent with current best practice standards and evidence based care
  • Manage immunisations including the register, auditing and ordering
  • Provide advice, education and referrals as necessary
  • Provide and initiate other primary health care clinical services as required and necessary
  • Manage recalls and reminders for the clinic including daily urgent recalls, ensuring all recalling of patients for treatments is up-to-date at all times.
  • Understand billing options and assist in maximising MBS item numbers billed within the clinic including follow up items from the nurse
  • Ensure that all relevant information is documented to support Medicare billing as relevant to the duties performed, and is complete and accurate at all times
  • Observe child protection legislation and mandatory reporting obligations in all work with clients
  • Oversee monthly audit of supplies and consumables
  • Oversee prompt ordering of supplies as per clinic guidelines
  • Oversee maintenance and yearly calibrations of all medical equipment within the Branch
  • Participate and provide mentoring to staff as required
  • Assist and participate in patient advocacy within the clinic

2. Vaccine storage

  • Ensure that the integrity of all immunisations is maintained.
  • Understand cold chain management and maintain the cold chain.
  • Understand and uphold all policies and NHMRC guidelines in respect to vaccine storage and management.

3. Infection Control

  • Adhere to infection control principles, policies and procedures at all times.
  • Educate staff on the principles, policies and procedures of infection control.
  • Sterilise used instruments according to best practice standards and Australian guidelines
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are clean and ready for clients to use
  • Educate and enforce infection control policies and procedure within the clinical setting

 

4. Health Education

  • Educate internal and external workers on issues relevant to the health of Aboriginal people
  • Provide education to clients and community on care, chronic disease management and health prevention
  • Promote cooperative and collaborative working relationships with other health service providers  and Aboriginal community organisations in the area
  • With the Branch Manager participate in clinical research/needs assessments as required
  • Participate in events, activities and programs relevant to the health of Aboriginal people

 

5. Accountability

  • Ensure that Nursing targets and KPI’s are achieved in line with Katungul’s funding agreement and National Key Performance Indicators
  • Assist with creating, maintaining and updating policies and procedures within the clinical setting
  • Maintain standards as per Accreditation requirements e.g. AGPAL and QIC
  • Work with the Branch Manager to address any anticipated or actual difficulty in achieving KPI’s
  • Submit regular and accurate service data in accordance with policy and funding requirements
  • Provide regular reports to the Branch Manager regarding clinical health statistics
  • Participate in Branch Meetings and Stream Meetings

 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

 

Essential

  • Registration as a Nurse
  • At least 3 years postgraduate experience in nursing
  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues and barriers that impact upon the health outcomes of Aboriginal people
  • Excellent culturally appropriate verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to discuss and explain complex issues to clients
  • Ability to collect data and write reports, and willingness to comply with reporting requirements of the organisation
  • Ability to prioritise workload and demonstrated organisational skills
  • Ability to maintain or be willing to achieve Immunisation accreditation
  • Ability to maintain or be willing to achieve Cervical Screening (Well Women Screening) accreditation
  • Current Class C unrestricted NSW drivers Licence

 

Desirable

  • Experience in community health, Aboriginal health or an Aboriginal organisation
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • Registered as a Diabetic Educator
  • Previous experience using PracSoft and  Medical Director or similar systems
  • Previous experience working towards achieving nKPI’s (national key performance indicators) and reporting on these.
