THE ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL - CARDIAC SURGERY UNIT

 

Position: Cardiac Surgery Fellow: 12 month post

 

As the largest paediatric cardiac centre in Australia, we provide comprehensive cardiac surgical services for patients in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. We also provide cardiac surgery to International patients.

 

The Cardiac Surgery Unit was founded in 1976 and has performed over 16,000 procedures. We provide comprehensive care for neonates, infants, children, and young adults. Currently we perform around 700 operations per year, with an emphasis on treatment of neonatal and complex congenital cardiac problems.

 

We have extensive experience in cardiopulmonary transplantation, circulatory support (VAD and ECMO), minimally invasive techniques, and reconstructive valve surgery. Our surgical team is supported by excellent Intensive Care, Cardiology, Anaesthetic, Nursing and other paediatric specialty services.

 

The Cardiac Surgery Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital is offering a Fellow position. 

 

The position is offered as a 12 month position. 

 

Selection Criteria:

The candidate must have completed basic surgical training, general cardiac surgery training and have relatively important experience at registrar level of paediatric cardiac surgery in a reputable unit.   

 

The successful candidate will be part of our cardiac medical team and first assistant surgeon for the three senior full-time consultants.  The candidate will perform surgery as main operator under direct supervision from one of the three surgeons, assist the ward and intensive care unit in the management of paediatric cardiac surgery patients. The candidate will be on-call one in three and be responsible for the collection of clinical data and the preparation of weekly and monthly Mortality and Morbidity meeting.  The successful candidate is expected to participate to clinical research and to be first author for at least one paper during their 12 month Fellowship. The candidate will need to provide ethical decision making in achievements of organisational goals.  Comply with and utilize procedures, policies, regulations & standards of the Royal Children’s Hospital.

 

The successful candidate must be technically facile in the skills of adult cardiac surgery.  Some experience as first operator in paediatric cardiac surgery is valued.  The candidate will be in continuous contact with consultant surgeons, theatre nurses, ICU personnel medical and nursing, ward doctors and nurses, administrative staff, Cardiology staff, medical senior and junior. 

 

All international applicants MUST sit and pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or provide evidence that your entire Secondary and Tertiary education was completed in English***

 

***Please note that secondary education results are only accepted from the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, New Zealand and South Africa.  All doctors who have completed their secondary education in any other country must provide current IELTS results, Academic module, with minimum band scores of 7 in every category (reading, writing, listening, speaking).

 

Our fellow's positions are highly competitive. We usually select surgeons who are planning on a career primarily in paediatric cardiac surgery.
