The Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute and Department of Head and Neck Surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse has a strong track of more than 300 records of research publications. The department collaborates in research with the department of tissue pathology at RPAH, radiation oncology, speech pathology and a variety of basic science researchers and clinicians from other institutions. The head and neck database contains clinicopathological data on over 14 000 patients and most research publications depend on this resource.

The opportunity

The primary role of the research coordinator is to facilitate research at the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute and Department of head and neck surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

Essential duties:

  • Co-ordination of all research meetings
  • Maintain an inventory of research projects including details of cancer tissue specimens used for genomic analysis and other laboratory studies
  • Completion and submission of ethics applications to relevant institutional ethics committees.
  • Identification of potential sources of funding for research. Including, but not be limited to, national and state research funding bodies (e.g. NHMRC, CINSW, Cancer Council), international research funding bodies (e.g. NIH), university, institutional and collaborative bodies (e.g. USyd, UNSW, RPA, COBLH and Sydney Catalyst), specific head and neck funding bodies (e.g. ANZHNCS, Garnette Passe), philanthropic organisations (e.g. Ramanciotti, Perpetual, Equity trustees) and health care organisation (e.g. HCF).
  • Work closely with the development team to manage philanthropic relationships with prospective and engaged donors
  • Develop an annual program of grant applications
  • With appropriate support write and submit grant applications
  • Obtain required institutional authority and signatures to submit grant applications and ethics applications
  • Keep a record of all ethics and grant applications
  • Provide progress reports to relevant ethics and funding bodies
  • Keep a record of all publications and successful funding
  • Write an annual research report
  • Develop and maintain a social media presence on behalf of the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute
  • Monitor and record research related expenditure including a spreadsheet with tracked expenses and liaise with relevant stakeholders to process invoices related to research spending
  • Provide support to the head and neck team with other aspects of research as required

The Research Assistant will report directly to Professor Jonathan Clark, who directs the head and neck clinical research program and indirectly to A/Prof Ruta Gupta, head of translational research and A/Prof Carsten Palme, head of department of head and neck surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
