About the (Artistic) Operations Manager (OM) role

This position requires the efficient and effective management of the artistic duties of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, covering our concert seasons at the Melbourne Recital Centre and Federation Square, our regional touring program, education program, external hires and special events. In 2018, MCO will stage around 50 performances and events, around half of which are in regional Victoria or peri-urban Melbourne.

We are seeking an appropriately qualified, capable and experienced person, who is highly motivated, able to manage flexible hours and can tour with the orchestra. Working within a very small team, a “can-do” and flexible approach is expected. This position works closely with the Artistic Director (AD) and reports to the Executive Director (ED). It is a requirement that leave is not taken during critical operational periods.

Role includes:

  • management of performers, including contracting, schedules, and itineraries
  • sourcing and preparing score and parts
  • managing rehearsals and production, including venue hire, and instrument freight
  • managing concerts, including production requirements, venue liaison, and backstage management
  • substantial touring with the orchestra on its regional performances and workshops across Victoria.

Full job description is available on our website https://mco.org.au/about/employment/

About Melbourne Chamber Orchestra

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra brings together Melbourne’s finest professional chamber musicians in a virtuosic small orchestra, offering intimate encounters with the greatest fine music from the pre-Baroque to today, and creating a deep expression of our city’s unique artistic spirit. The orchestra’s Artistic Director is the violinist and educator William Hennessy AM.

Founded in 1991 as Australia Pro Arte Orchestra, MCO presents music for between four and thirty musicians. Straddling chamber ensembles and symphonic forces, it performs not just as Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, but also as Australian Octet and MCO Quartet. MCO’s repertoire encompasses up to six centuries of musical heritage, and includes an active commissioning program to extend our musicmaking into the future.

The orchestra serves Melbourne audiences through its annual seasons at the Recital Centre and The Deakin Edge, Federation Square, and significantly improves access to the arts for regional Victorians through its extensive touring programs.

The orchestra’s touring program includes around 30 performances each year around Victoria. The orchestra’s annual festival in Daylesford, A Feast of Music, is usually held in September.
