SMGT has opportunities for up to 40 young people to participate in a two-year full time employment project at a number of farms in our region to develop the next generation of horticulture leaders.
SMGT, SuniTAFE and a selection of Sunraysia’s leading Horticulture businesses have collaborated to develop an on-farm Cadetship.
Successful applicants will undertake a Certificate III in Production Horticulture (AHC30616), learn on-the-job and attend regular trade school blocks.
Critical thinking, practical / real world problem solving skills and use of technology are equally important as physical strength and work ethic.

Farms need to adopt new technology and provide leadership to take farming to the next level; communication, planning, leadership and coaching are crucial elements to developing the farmers of the future.
The Certificate III qualification reflects the role of individuals required to apply a broad range of knowledge and skills in varied contexts and undertake skilled work. Certificate III is suitable for experienced operators, technicians and trade workers. Certificate lll serves also as a pathway to further learning.
KEY RESPONSIBIILITIES
Under the direction and supervision of the Manager and in accordance with the policies and procedures the Horticulture Cadet is required to:
- Install and operate irrigation and drainage systems.
- Control pests / weeds and disease.
- Identify and treat pests and diseases on plants.
- Thin out, hoe and fertilise crops.
- Use hazardous substances (under supervision).
- Prepare soils for planting.
- Identify and harvest crops.
- General maintenance and operation of work machinery.
- General maintenance and cleaning.
- Attend relevant professional development as required.
- Attend relevant meetings and perform other duties as requested
PERSONAL REQUIRMENTS
- Interested with a desire to learn
- Interested in practical and mechanical work
- Able to undertake manual work
- Must be punctual, polite and reliable
- Able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Driver’s Licence preferred
The position is full time 38 hours per week. There will also be a training component, which will need to be completed as part of the New Apprenticeship. The successful applicant will be placed on a three month probation period.
