Murphy Fresh is one of Australia's leading growers of delicious vine-ripened, glasshouse grown truss tomatoes which are stocked in major supermarkets across Australia. Established in 1999, Murphy Fresh is a family owned business that maintains its competitive edge through constant innovation. The farm is located in Mansfield, in North-Eastern Victoria and currently has a growing area of 5.5 hectare, and employs up to 60 employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, develop and document the overall picking / leafing strategy of the 5-10ha glasshouse working with key management
- Monitor and evaluate the picking / leafing to determine technical actions to achieve targets and quality standards
- Maintain and drive efficiencies with major labour inputs, technique and KPIs
- Maximise picking / leafing production through correct procedure / feedback and coaching.
- Liaise with Produce manager daily on yield and quality to help correct crop/fruit issues
- Report on pest and disease in line with regulatory obligations
- Manage, develop and support a large number of employees including other supervisors
- Work with Management team on decisions involving produce inputs, labour management & capital expenses
- Explore developments in Glasshouse picking / leafing labour techniques and equipment to recommend opportunities and continuous improvement activities
- Record keeping, quality checking of all picking and leafing personal
- Assist in picking, packing, leafing, crop work and clean out duties when required.
- Schedule and manage staff and labour to ensure daily / weekly / monthly coverage
- Management of employees including recruitment, training and performance management
- Work with Maintenance to ensure all equipment and facilities are in good working order and capable of functioning as intended
- Prepare yearly budgets and work to the budget
- Be available for scheduled on call duties, scheduled weekend work and public holidays
Skills and Experience
- Preferred experience in Glasshouse tomato production
- Previous experience in the horticultural industry
- Proven capability/experience in managing/coordinating large numbers of staff from various cultural backgrounds
- Experience in team management – must be able to lead, manage and instruct labour staff
- Able to work independently and collaboratively
- Sound understanding of OHS systems and implementation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of key business and cost drivers
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English (written and verbal)
- Sound analytical, problem solving and computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Experience with production and planning, budgeting and forecasting
