About Community Legal Centres Association Western Australia

The Community Legal Centre Association (WA) is the peak body for Western Australian Community Legal Centres (‘CLCs’). There are currently 28 CLCs that are members of the Association.

The primary functions of the Association are to:

  • Build capacity and expertise, and promote effectiveness and efficiency, in individual CLCs and the broader community legal sector; and,
  • Contribute to human rights and social justice, including through law reform campaigns, advocacy, and community and legal professional education

The Association is governed by an Executive Committee comprising 8 representatives of Member Centres elected at the Annual General Meeting.

The Role

Sector Sustainability Coordinator

The Sector Sustainability Coordinator will be responsible for key strategic projects for the Community Legal Centres Association (WA) related to the sustainability of the WA community legal sector.

The role will include supporting CLCs to work with each other in new and different ways, and to enable their capacity to respond to key sector trends and changing funding environments. The role will include facilitating strategic alliances, co-locations and possible mergers between CLCs.

The Sector Sustainability Coordinator will also be responsible for working with the Executive Director to strategically assess and respond to the needs of the community legal sector and maximise opportunities and innovation, including across service planning, continuous improvement, operations and funding.

Duties

Deliver projects and activities that provide resources and support to CLCs to:

  • plan, design and evaluate community legal services for disadvantaged Western Australians, including participating in jurisdictional service planning processes required under the National Partnership Agreement for Legal Assistance Services;
  • effectively operate a community legal centre including building workforce capacity, scoping efficiencies and building financial sustainability; and
  • enter into discussions about strategic alliances, co-location and mergers with other CLCs.

Maintain relationships with the legal assistance sector and other key stakeholders and decision-makers to advocate and represent member’s interests.

Participate in Community Legal Centre WA activities and services, including planning, evaluation and annual reporting processes.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or substantial practice experiences in the areas of work of this position
  • Experience with mergers, strategic alliances and other forms of structured sector collaboration.
  • Experience or understanding of strategic planning, research, evaluation and evidence-based practice.
  • Excellent demonstrated policy development and project management skills and experience, including strategic thinking and planning.
  • Experience or understanding of the work of community organisations, legal services, or related field.
  • Understanding of the operations of CLCs and the various contexts in which they operate, and the diversity of their operations.
  • Knowledge of the standards and performance requirements expected of not-for-profit organisations by funding bodies.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Salary and Conditions

Salary: $100,000 pro rata.

This is a Fixed Term Contract of 12 months with a possibility of extension subject to funding

Hours: Negotiable 0.6 to 1.0 FTE depending on the needs and preferences of the successful candidate and the Association.
