The Organisation

Our customer is a leading Community based intake and referral service, who are seeking an experienced Identified Engagement and Referral Practitioner to work within a Family and Child Connect Team. Based in the Gold Coast, the Family and Child Connect Service provides information and advice to people seeking assistance for children and families where there are concerns about their wellbeing.

The successful candidate will provide active engagement and referral support to vulnerable families where there are child protection concerns, including conducting cold calls and appointments with both consenting and non-consenting clients.

Reporting to the Team leader, the successful candidate will work alongside a Cultural Advisor to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inclusivity in the workplace and culturally appropriate service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a case load of client families (maximum of 6 weeks intervention period)
  • Identify and respond to child protection concerns
  • Discuss child protection worries with families and contribute to safety planning
  • Successfully engage families in a timely manager and gain their consent to refer into appropriate services
  • Make effective referrals for client families to meet their identified needs
  • Assist in managing the family phone line (rotating rosterTuesday evening)
  • Provide specialist consultation and advice to colleagues to enhance culturally appropriate service responses
  • Provide advice on culturally appropriate service options for children and family
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, community and practitioners on the Gold Coast
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data entry records

 

To be Successful

Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultural background and/or have considerable experience working with people from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

As a minimum, applicants for this position must hold a Bachelor Degree from an accredited Australian tertiary institution, and a minimum of two years’ experience in Child Protection.

The following qualifications are acceptable:

A Bachelor’s degree in:

  • Social Work (or social work majors with a practicum component)
  • Human Services or Social Welfare
  • Psychology or Behavioural Science
  • Master of Social Work (Qualifying)
  • Criminology

 (Membership of a relevant professional association is highly desirable)

  • At least 2 years’’ experience working within the child protection field
  • Ability to identify family and individual client needs using a child-centred approach
  • Ability to identify and respond to child protection concerns
  • A high level of engagement skills including experience in engaging with non-consenting clients in a respectful and non-threating manner
  • Ability to quickly and respectfully build rapport and gain family trust and consent to enable referral to other services
  • Cultural awareness and und understanding of hot wo communicate and work effectively with families from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and take directions from management
  • Current Drivers Licence  
  • Current Working With Children Check (or ability to obtain)
