About MacKillop Specialist School, Geelong Campus

MacKillop Specialist School is part of the education services provided by MacKillop Family Services, whose founding members, the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of St Joseph and the Christian Brothers have a long and rich tradition of ensuring equity and access to education for all children. MacKillop Specialist School caters for children (Foundation-VCAL) who are disengaged from learning, have complex and diverse needs and therefore require extensive adjustments to access learning.

Due to MacKillop Education Services expanding over the last 5 years, we are restructuring seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate and committed to working with these children, young people and their families to enhance their educational outcomes.

About the role

MacKillop is currently seeking a Principal who will work closely with the Executive Principal, and the local and combined Leadership Teams. This is a key role within the organisation and he/she will be a member of the Leadership Team. This position reports to the Executive Principal.

The Principal will have particular oversight for MacKillop Specialist School and Education Services in Geelong.

This is a full-time position with the commence date of Term 1 2019. The Principal has an ongoing tenure as a teacher at the School.

This position will be primarily based in the Geelong campus of the MacKillop Specialist School. Some travel may be required.

Key responsibilities

The Principal is responsible for the following general areas of leadership, but will have particular responsibility for exercising them in Geelong:

  • Faith and Identity Leadership
  • Educational Leadership
  • Community Leadership
  • Administrative Leadership

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Be accredited to teach in a Catholic School, or exemption from the requirement of Accreditation
  • Have full registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching
  • Have relevant experience and academic qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Have a strong commitment to promoting the values and ethos of the Catholic tradition.
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the charism of MacKillop and the culture and ethos of a Catholic school.
  • Relevant teaching qualifications and/or postgraduate qualifications in education, educational leadership, theology, or other similar or relevant tertiary qualifications.
  • Have successful experience in senior level leadership position(s), such as Principal, Deputy Principal, Dean, CEO Senior Officer, or Education Department Leadership roles.
  • Be able to demonstrate appropriate competencies in the leadership areas of identity, education, pastoral care, community building and management as outlined in the role description.
  • Have an understanding of trauma-informed practice in an educational setting.
  • Be able and prepared to travel, as required.

Highly Desirable Criteria

  • Have experience teaching in a Catholic school.
  • Have demonstrated experience and understanding of working with primary and secondary aged young people who are disenfranchised from education.
  • Have demonstrated experience in the development of individualised and flexible curriculum content, pedagogy and trauma informed practice.
  • Have a proven ability to work in a complex multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment with a focus on democratic participatory leadership.
  • Have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and associated educational challenges.
