About the school

The College began in 2008 and is situated at Pickartaramoor on the Southern part of Melville Island. Our dynamic secondary boarding school was initiated and is governed by the Tiwi people to provide quality education for the young Tiwi. The college provides education for students from communities on Bathurst and Melville Islands with a strong Tiwi culture.

Tiwi College prides itself on its strong community culture which has evolved over the last 7 years to result in excellent student attendance and retention rates. It currently has an of just over 100 students. As a relatively new and well-resourced facility, staff have excellent conditions as part of their work entitlements and due to all of these factors, staff satisfaction levels and retention rates are extremely high.

Tiwi College now has a rewarding opportunity for a Junior Young Men Classroom Teacher to join their staff on a full-time basis. This is a position teaching students aged from 12-14 years of age, who have low literacy and numeracy levels. For cultural reasons this position is best suited to a male applicant.

As the teacher of this class, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the curriculum planning, implementation of learning programs and the provision of the primary well-being of students in your care.

The role is very similar to that of a primary teacher. The teacher and the Tiwi Assistant Teacher is responsible for the teaching and learning of most subjects for the one class. We are lucky enough to have specialist Art and PE teachers on-site. This position would be well suited to someone who has trained in Primary or ESL though this is not a requirement.   

The role is well suited to a passionate and energetic person who has a very empathetic approach and enjoys challenges and adventures. There are many opportunities to work outdoors, thus this should also be taken into account.
