Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Karara operates an iron ore mine and associated infrastructure in the mid-west region of W.A.  The operation is designed for a +30 year mine life and production of 8Mtpa.  It comprises a long life and world-class magnetite deposit; dedicated rail infrastructure; and an integrated train load-out/ship loading facility at our Geraldton port operations. Karara is breaking new ground with the development and ongoing operation of the first significant iron ore mine in the mid- west.

We have an opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Health and Safety Advisor to join the team based at the Karara Mine Site. You will be responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture in the workplace by working collaboratively with managers and workers to ensure that the health and safety management system is well understood and consistently applied across the organisation.

This role operates on an 8:6 FIFO roster.

 Key responsibilities: 

  • Support the effective application of Karara’s risk management processes including risk assessments at the personal, group and organisational level
  • Participate in incident investigations and support the tracking of preventive and corrective actions through to completion
  • Maintain integrity of data in the Karara incident management database
  • Conduct data analysis to identify trends and inform health and safety improvement initiatives
  • Provide specialist advice and support with regard to all relevant health and safety legislation and Karara’s safety policies and procedures
  • Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and other health and safety training programs as required
  • Assist in the development, implementation, maintenance and improvement of health and safety management standards, procedures, tools and templates
  • Support Karara’s hygiene monitoring program by conducting atmospheric contaminant sampling and calibration of sampling equipment
  • Complete health and safety audits and inspections in accordance with Karara’s compliance monitoring program and prepare reports clearly articulating findings, non-compliances and opportunities for improvement
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of health and safety improvement initiatives

Key requirements:

  • Substantial experience in a similar role within the resource sector
  • Relevant degree preferred / minimum Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Surface Ventilation Technician qualification is desirable
  • Well-developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other applicable software programs
