Detail information about job PhD Studentship: RF Power Amplifier Characterisation, Modelling and Linearisation for Future Wireless Communications. Terms and conditions vacancy
Duration 3.5 years
Starting date 18 September 2017
The project: If successful you will work on the characterisation, modelling and linearization of a transmitter in the presence of wideband signals. The PhD research is expected to reveal new type of nonlinear behaviour that classic or state-of-the-art transmitters behavioural models might not be able to predict and hence compensate for. The proposed PhD is part of a research project led by Dr. Bensmida in collaboration with international academic partners in Germany and UAE. The PhD candidate will benefit from advanced measurement data provided by the research team and will be involved in the development of state-of-the art measurement platform that will be demonstrated in international conferences. The PhD student needs to be able to grasp behavioural modelling concepts and the research team will direct him/her to relevant literature and support him/her to progress. After this initial literature review, the PhD student will begin exploring new behavioural models architecture and assess them with measurement data. The recent acquisition of a very high speed scope (80Gsamples/s) will be an essential tool to help understand the dynamic nonlinear behaviour of wireless transmitters. Accessing this state-of-the-art scope will allow the PhD student to confirm his/her behavioural models robustness independently from the research team work packages.
Further Particulars Subject areas (for use in online searches): Electronic Engineering, wireless communications, mobile communications, RF Power Amplifier, Digital Signal Processing, microwave instrumentation.
How to apply: Please make an online application for this project at http://www.bris.ac.uk/pg-howtoapply. Please select < Electrical and Electronic Engineering> on the Programme Choice page and enter details of the studentship when prompted in the Funding and Research Details sections of the form together with the name of the supervisor, Dr Souheil Ben Smida.
Candidate requirements: An essential requirement is a good undergraduate degree (1st, 2:1 or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic engineering (or a closely related subject).
Basic skills and knowledge required: The successful candidate should have a strong background in RF engineering and FPGA programming, and previous experience on RF power amplifiers characterisation, design and linearization, as well as microwave instrumentation is desired.
Funding: Scholarship covers full UK/EU (EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to application) PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the current RCUK rate (£14,553 in 2017/18). EU nationals resident in the EU may also apply and will qualify only for PhD tuition fees
