Detail information about job Postdoctoral Fellow - Cancer Project. Terms and conditions vacancy

Three years fixed term

A postdoctoral position is available at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute under the leadership of Professor Sir Mike Stratton as part of the CRUK Grand Challenge, Mutographs of Cancer Project.

This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to unravel the mutational signatures that will explain the major global differences in cancer incidence, to understand the biological mechanisms underlying cancer-causing mutational processes and to explore their application towards surveillance of mutagenic exposures in human populations.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD and will have expertise in the large-scale analyses of next-generation sequencing data to extract mutational signatures and interpret the results; and/or in single cell data analysis of normal cell populations. They will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will be tasked with proactively seeking and maintaining appropriate collaborations. Successful candidates will also be expected to drive forward the project, working closely with the Project Manager and other relevant team members to accomplish scientific objectives.

Essential Skills

  • A PhD in Genomics, Genetics, Biology (or similar), or awaiting their PhD award
  • Experience in next generation sequencing and the analysis of sequencing data
  • Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas
  • The ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and occasionally present oral communication to large groups
  • Team player with ability to effectively prioritise, multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, including using initiative to plan research programmes
  • Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail

Ideal Skills

  • Post-doctoral experience in a research environment
  • An understanding, experience and published outcomes from analysing and interpreting large datasets using at least one statistical package (e.g. R/SPLUS, SAS) and experience in programming (e.g. Perl, Python, C++, Java)
  • Single cell data analysis of normal cell populations
  • Experience in a range of molecular biology techniques
  • Training in statistical methods appropriate for biological research
  • Experience in genomics approaches and in method development

Other information

Cancer Research UK's Grand Challenge is the most ambitious cancer research grant in the world - a series of £20m awards supporting international, multi-disciplinary teams willing to take on the toughest challenges in cancer - providing the freedom to try novel approaches, at scale, in the pursuit of life changing discoveries.

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), Open Targets, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre.

Please include a covering letter and CV with your application

Closing date 15th September 2017, however applications will be considered and reviewed on an on-going basis and therefore the post may be filled before the deadline
