Detail information about job Research Fellow in Enhanced Weathering of Mine Waste Material. Terms and conditions vacancy
We invite applications for a Research Fellow to work within a project funded as part of the NERC-led UK research programme on Greenhouse Gas Removal from the Atmosphere. The researcher will characterise tailing and other mine waste material produced by diamond, chromium and platinum group element extraction to assess its potential to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) through mineral carbonation. They will conduct small scale field experiments at mines in South Africa to test engineering solutions for enhancing rates of CO2 removal. The position is based at Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton, at the purpose built waterfront campus of the University of Southampton.
The Research Fellow will work closely with other researchers in this project to deliver an integrated life cycle analysis on the feasibility of using mine wastes to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. They are expected to have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Geology and Geochemistry, along with considerable experience in field geology and the petrological, mineralogical and geochemical characterisation of mafic and ultramafic ore deposits and their host rocks. Independence, problem-solving, self-motivation, and well-developed time-management skills along with the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing are essential.
The successful candidate will work within the Geochemistry Research Group under the guidance of Professor Rachael James, Dr Juerg Matter, Professor Damon Teagle, and in close collaboration with other project partners, both in the UK and internationally.
The post is available for 2 years, and will start in Q4 2017.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Rachael James ([email protected]).
Applications for Research Fellow positions will also be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
