Lecturer/Senior Lecturer – grades 7-8

As part of a major investment programme in compound semiconductor science and technology, Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy seeks a talented, motivated academic with expertise in metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) and associated materials development as a platform for advanced optoelectronics and photonics, to join the Sêr Cymru research group, and to contribute to the Schools undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

The Sêr Cymru group targets integrated and functional device platforms to merge optoelectronic devices with heterogeneous integration, nanostructures, metamaterials and plasmonics. Applications includes communication links, remote sensing, medical imaging and quantum technology with local, international and industrial collaborations.  The group and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) form part of over £300M investment in new research and innovation, with substantial investment by the Welsh and UK governments.  The ICS will be a unique facility in Europe, equipped with state-of-the art fabrication, epitaxy and device characterisation facilities.  Stimulated by demand for creative and professional prototyping services, the ICS provides an environment to advance academic research towards industrially-facing projects and is foundational member of the Compound Semiconductor Cluster.

You will have a PhD in Engineering, Physics or a closely-related subject area from a leading university, or relevant industrial experience, and be capable of leading and managing an MOCVD facility. You will have an outstanding track record in the field of compound semiconductor-based optoelectronic or photonic devices or technology demonstrated through publications in high quality academic journals, collaborative industrial experience, and success in gaining and enhancing research income. You will be an experienced teacher or have clearly demonstrated the ability to teach effectively at University level.

The post is full time and open ended. It is initially funded by the Sêr Cymru programme until 31st December 2020, and will involve no obligatory teaching duties during that period. 

The appointment will be made at a level commensurate with experience: Lecturer – grade 7 or Senior Lecturer – grade 8.             

Salary

Lecturer:                                   £40,523 – £46,924 per annum

Senior Lecturer:                         £48,327 - £ 55,998 per annum
