Detail information about job Research Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience and Movement Disorders, UCL Institute of Neurology, under the supervision of Dr Barney Bryson and working closely with Prof Linda Greensmith and Prof Giampietro Schiavo.

This project is part of our team’s ongoing efforts to develop a novel therapeutic strategy to overcome paralysis. Using a combination of stem cell derived neural replacement, optogenetics and sophisticated optical stimulation and imaging techniques, the post holder will study the mechanisms underlying muscle innervation and develop strategies to optimize muscle reinnervation by neural grafts, thus paving the way for translational implementation of this strategy.

The role of the successful candidate will be to employ a variety of techniques, ranging from immunohistochemistry, in vivo and in vitro imaging and electrophysiological techniques to investigate a range of models aimed at furthering the development of a unique strategy to overcome paralysis.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant discipline (eg neuroscience, bioscience or similar field), and experience in electrophysiological techniques including stimulation and recording, including patch clamping. Experience in cell and tissue culture techniques, including primary neuronal culture and in confocal microscopy and multiphoton imaging is essential. The ability to perform confocal and/or multiphoton microscopy is also a requirement. Experience with software tools such as ImageJ, the ability to perform vivo tracer injections, and the ability to perform quantitative image analysis is desirable.

The post is available immediately and is funded by a UCL Excellence Fellowship Fund for two years in the first instance. Starting salary on UCL Grade 7 £34,056 pa, including London Allowance, superannuable.

You should apply for this post through UCL's online recruitment – www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs where you can download a job description and person specification using ref: 1649579.

If you have any queries regarding the application process, please contact Samantha Robinson, HR Officer, Institute of Neurology, 23 Queen Square, London, WC1N 3BG (email: [email protected]).

Applicants may contact Dr Bryson directly (email: [email protected]) for further information.

Closing date: 30 September 2017
