Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and engineering.
About the role
RAL Space is involved in all aspects of the design, manufacture, assembly and test of hardware and software for space-based and ground-based scientific instruments. Important elements of support for this work are the Product, Quality and Safety assurance functions, all provided by the RAL Space Product Assurance Group. The group oversees the department’s ISO9001-certified Quality Management System, monitors and supports compliance with the STFC Safety Codes, and provides Product Assurance support to projects.
The Product Assurance Group is looking to appoint a Senior Product Assurance Specialist (Band E), who would be expected to contribute to at least two of these assurance functions – Product, Quality or Safety. Appointment as a Product Assurance Specialist (Band D) may be offered to suitable candidates who do not meet all the criteria for the more senior role.
- For Quality Assurance you would carry out internal audits, write and maintain documented processes and procedures, help develop departmental policy and practice, investigate and follow-up non-conformances and train department staff in aspects of quality management
- For Product Assurance, you would act as Product Assurance Manager for a portfolio of projects. This role includes responsibility for writing the Product Assurance Plan then ensuring that the activities it prescribes are followed, including material and process control, conformance control, incoming and outgoing inspection, supporting and auditing suppliers and preparing End Item Data Packages
- For Safety Assurance, activities would be in the context of the STFC corporate Safety, Health and Environment system covering generic good safety practice plus management of hazards including cryogens, lasers, pressure/vacuum systems and radioactive sources. You would run and follow up internal audits and safety tours, and provide advice across the department on compliance with statutory, regulatory and corporate requirements.
You will have a QCF/FHEQ Level 6 (Degree) or higher qualification in a STEM subject and experience of any two of the following: Product Assurance; Quality Assurance; Safety Assurance.
You must have substantial work experience of a scientific, engineering or technical nature.
You must be capable of thorough and conscientious work to tight deadlines across multiple projects simultaneously, adapting to changing priorities as the need arises.
Excellent oral and written communication and experience of personnel and budgetary management is essential.
