Detail information about job Research Fellow. Terms and conditions vacancy

Fixed term for 3 years

We have one Postdoctoral research opportunity working within the laboratory of Professor Javier F. Caceres at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh, funded by the MRC.

Background

Our research focuses on the role of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) in gene expression at different levels during the RNA processing cascade from splicing in the nucleus to translation in the cytoplasm. We are particularly interested in understanding how alterations to the RNA processing cascade contribute to human disease.

Research objectives

We are interested in the regulation of microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis at the post-transcriptional level. This position will focus on the role of sequence variation and RNA structure in controlling miRNA biogenesis in human populations. We will investigate how individual SNPs affect miRNA biogenesis, focusing not only on common genetic variants but also on rare variants associated with human disease.

This project will be in collaboration with Martin Taylor lab (computational biology at MRC HGU). This position will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on the molecular, biochemical, and cellular aspects of RNA processing in eukaryotes. The group is part of the MRC HGU and provides opportunities to develop research project skills and develop collaborative links with colleagues within the Institute and elsewhere. The MRC Human Genetics Unit is a highly multidisciplinary environment and is part of the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM).

Qualifications required

Prospective candidates should hold a PhD (or near completion) or the equivalent in a relevant science subject and have proven previous experience in molecular and cell biology; biochemistry and/or structural approaches with a keen interest in gene expression.

The Human Genetics Unit has facilities and expertise in a wide range of disciplines; more information on the research in the Unit can be found at http://www.ed.ac.uk/mrc-human-genetics-unit.
