The Centre for Aerospace Manufacturing (CAM) requires a highly versatile and skilled mechanical engineer to join our team. The role will involve application of a range of professional engineering skills relating to the design, manufacture, comissioing, and use of aerospace automated assembly facilities in support of CAM research. This role encompasses all aspects of the mechanical system including control and instrumentation. In some cases, the role may extend to taking and analysing test data.
Working as part of a small team the post holder will assume a significant role in implementing automated aerospace manufacturing and assembly projects. The role holder will both manage industrial research projects and carry out research, contributing to the overall impact of our work. Liaison with academics, researchers, technology partners, and industrial partners will form a part of the role. This post may involve travel to partner sites across Europe.
This role is primarily aimed at aerospace but may also address opportunities in domains such as automotive and energy. This post will focus on the development of advanced automation systems and processes, intelligent robotics, and context aware end-effector systems to further exploit the University of Nottingham's investment in a Future Automated Aircraft Assembly Demonstrator (FA3D).
Candidates must have an understanding, and preferably direct experience, of one or more of the following areas:
- Automated manufactuing and assembly processes.
- Process automation and robotics.
- Aerospace engineering requirements.
- Concept and design skills applied to complex assembly cells and fixtures or similar.
- Experience of systems engineering involving the coupling or embedding of large software projects to hardware.
- CAD/CAM expertise in electrical or mechanical domains.
Key tasks for the post will include:
- Development and implementation of new concepts for automated assembly.
- Testing and validation of technology demonstrators.
- Management of automated assembly systems development and validation.
- Liaison with industrial and academic partners and technology suppliers.
- Reporting to key stakeholders.
Candidates must hold a BEng or equivalent in an appropriate field. They should be confident, have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a team. Experience of working within the UK and EU in both industry and research is preferable.
This full time post is offered on a fixed-term contract for 2 years.
