The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) of the Science and Technology Facilities Council is a national centre for the design and development of world leading astronomical instruments, telescopes and systems for both ground-based and space-based astronomy programs. The electronics and detector engineering group at the UKATC designs, builds and supports integration of precision scientific instruments involving complex detector systems, cryogenic, vacuum and instrument control electronics for both astronomy and non-astronomy applications.

About The Role

The electronics and detectors group at the UKATC has a requirement for an experienced electronic craftsperson to support building electronic PCB assemblies, manufacture custom cables, solder and de-solder of electronic components such as through hole and surface mount components manually. To match the varying work requirements and responsibilities, candidates with capabilities to work at an electronics technician level as well as being a craftsperson will be preferred and could be considered for band C. The selected candidate is expected to undertake necessary training to achieve ESA (European Space Agency) certification in high-reliability soldering required to work on space flight instruments.

Reporting to a Senior Electronics Technician, you will undertake the following responsibilities: 

  • Interpret the electronics design drawings, assembly instructions and wiring details
  • Manufacture of electronic assemblies such as PCBs, soldering, de-soldering of discrete components, surface mount components, integrated circuits
  • Manually solder miniaturised components and wires by following assembly instructions/schematics to applicable quality standards
  • Manufacture of custom designed multi-screened cables delivering to a high standard
  • Carryout panel wiring, rack wiring, crimping connectors, wiring for vacuum and cryogenic use
  • Interact closely with other technicians, engineers and suppliers
  • Order components, cables to maintain electronics stores stock levels
  • Work in cleanrooms and in-situ on instruments as may be required
  • Assist with any other technical duties as directed by their line management
  • Undertake the mandatory safety and health training and any other technical training as may be required.

About You

As the successful candidate you will have knowledge of electronics components, electronics PCB assembly and handling procedures along with an awareness of electrostatic discharge protection procedures. You will have good attention to detail and good hand eye coordination. It is essential that you have good organisation skills such as organising lab equipment and tools, along with good communication skills both written and verbal.

Ideally, you will have knowledge of general electronics, components, cables and connectors and have relevant experience in soldering. You will have the ability to manage your own time and meet deadlines along with a willingness to learn and develop your professional skills

It is essential that you have the ability to work under your own initiative and as part of a team.
