About Us

The MRC Harwell Institute is recognised as an international centre of excellence in mouse genetics. Within this context, the mouse is used as a model organism for investigating the causes of genetic disease in man. The Institute comprises two closely integrated partners, the Mammalian Genetics Unit and the Mary Lyon Centre.

About the Role

We have a fixed term vacancy (until 31st Jan 2019) for a laboratory technician to work in the cryobiology facility at the Mary Lyon Centre, located at the Harwell-Insitute. The cryobiology facility currently comprises two modern, fully equiped laboratories and 5 members of staff. This dedicated team underpins the MRC’s embryo bank which is responsible for cryopreserving and distributing unique mouse models of human disease to the scientifc community http://www.har.mrc.ac.uk/services/archiving-distribution. The MRC’s embryo bank currently makes >2800 mouse strains available to the scientific community and is also a member of the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA: www.infrafrontier.eu).

About You

This role is critical to the future exploitation of mouse genetic resources at the Mary Lyon Centre. Although training will be given, the ideal candidate will have a proven track record in cryopreservation and related techniques (embryo manipulation, embryo transfer), a sound understanding of mammalian biology and/or experience in animal husbandry. Excellent communication skills, a customer focused approach to project delivery are essential requirements for this demanding role.
