Job Purpose

To deliver internationally excellent research and teaching, primarily in the Earth Science degree but also across the Geography & Earth Science undergraduate and post-graduate degrees and to undertake administration as assigned by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to enhancing the research profile of the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences (GES) including maintaining a track record of publications of international quality in leading journals.
  • Deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities for the Geographical & Earth Sciences undergraduate and post-graduate degree programmes, including the joint graduate school in Nankai (China).
  • Develop and maintain a research programme across the School, College and University.
  • Collaborate with current members of the School, strengthening our existing research fields.
  • Work with stakeholders to develop research projects, generate funding and produce impactful research.
  • Influence policy by engaging with regulators, policy makers and funding agencies.
  • Supervise undergraduate and Masters student projects.
  • Supervise and train postgraduate students to ensure their effective development.
  • Participate in appropriate research seminars/conferences within subject area.
  • Participate in School research group activities and wider initiatives (e.g. SUERC; SAGES+; IAPETUS DTC).
  • Lead aspects of the planning, organisation and delivery of postgraduate and/or undergraduate teaching activities, including field teaching, within GES in accordance with established School programmes.
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research–led approach to student learning.
  • Enhance the student learning experience.
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students.
  • Engage in knowledge exchange and outreach activities as appropriate.
  • Promote the University’s internationalisation agenda.
  • Undertake School administration and any other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

    The salary will be on the Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £34,520- £38,833 per annum.

    This position has funding for up to 12 months in the first instance.

    The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.

    All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University's relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court's policies.

    Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.

    The successful applicant of this post will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP).
