About the College

Kaplan International College London (KICL) works in partnership with the University of York; the University of Birmingham; Cranfield University; Westminster University; City, University of London; and Aston University, offering programmes of study designed to prepare international students for entry to these universities at undergraduate and postgraduate level. KICL has been offering international students university preparation courses since 2008 and today welcomes hundreds of students from more than 70 countries. Through a combination of high quality teaching and strong support throughout the programme, our students go on to a wide variety of degree programmes, from engineering and finance to law and journalism. Our vibrant off-campus college is located just seconds from Borough Market, in one of the capital’s most historic and lively areas.

About the Role

We are now recruiting a Programme Leader for Science and Engineering to manage the academic delivery and development of a designated suite of programmes offered by the college at Foundation and Pre-Master’s level. You will report to the Academic Director at KICL and will be part of the college Senior Management Group.

This vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for a passionate education professional with experience in international education, to work in a dynamic environment and play a very real part in the growth and development of the college.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing academic leadership to, and management of, a team of full-time and sessional staff involved in the delivery of subject modules.
  • Planning, management, and quality assurance of all science and engineering programmes.
  • Maintaining academic oversight of the delivery, assessment, and monitoring of all science and engineering subject modules.
  • Liaison with other academic managers and co-ordinators on relevant aspects of programme/module design, delivery, assessment, and monitoring.
  • Production of programme handbooks and overseeing the production of module handbooks and other material.
  • Holding Programme Committees, seeking and collating student and staff feedback, production of Annual Programme Reports, and collation of relevant annual module reports.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the college virtual learning environment (VLE).
  • Contributing to the recruitment, retention, and performance review of teaching staff.
  • Contributing to the delivery and assessment of modules (normal teaching load of 8-10 hours per week).
  • Working with the national Centre for Learning Innovation and Quality (CLIQ) to ensure that all aspects of assessment carried out by the college are in line with established procedures.
  • Overseeing the marking, double-marking, and feedback provision systems and processes, and ensuring that standardisation principles and practices are followed based on the KIP Academic Standards & Quality Manual.
  • Liaising with College Services to ensure all teaching staff are assisting with the maintenance of an accurate and up-to-date record of student attendance, performance, and lesson content records for modules delivered.
  • Communicating with the College Services Team to provide leadership and support during student induction and progression.
  • Representing the College at appropriate admissions, marketing, and academic events and meetings within KIC, with the partner universities and externally.
  • Any other duties as required from time to time by the Academic Director or College Director.

About You

To be successful in this role you will be expected to fulfil the criteria listed below:

  • Be a university graduate with a good degree, ideally in a relevant subject.
  • Have experience of successfully teaching students studying on university preparation courses, or at an equivalent academic level.
  • Have experience of managing teaching staff within a school or university environment.
  • Have excellent subject knowledge, and a good understanding of the UK higher education sector.
  • Be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the strategies needed to establish consistently high aspirations and excellent results from students.
  • Be a strong subject practitioner capable of consistently delivering excellent teaching.
  • Possess a student-centred and client-focused approach to work.
  • Be capable of communicating effectively with colleagues, students, and with members of the senior management team.
  • Be organised with the ability to organise your own workload, prioritise, and meet deadlines.
  • Be flexible in your approach and be capable of working under pressure as a performance driven team player and leader.
  • Possess high level analytical and problem solving skills with the ability and initiative to solve problems.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Be motivated to continually improve standards and achieve excellence.
  • Demonstrate resilience, motivation, and commitment to achieving high academic standards.
  • Be committed to the safeguarding and welfare of all students.
  • Be committed to, and able to demonstrate, ongoing professional development and training to establish high quality teaching.
  • Possession of a postgraduate degree and/or teaching qualification (desirable).
  • Specific experience of teaching international students, and of raising academic attainment in an international environment (desirable).
  • The ability to teach a second subject (desirable).
  • Highly developed IT skills and a willingness to keep up-to-date with new technologies, including VLE (desirable).
  • Experience of delivering and updating materials for use by international students (desirable).
  • Experience of education inspection (QAA/Ofsted/ISI) (desirable).
  • Membership of HEA or College of Teaching (desirable).

Special Requirements

This appointment will be subject to clearance from the Disclosure Barring Service (formerly CRB). Employment is conditional upon successful DBS clearance and on receiving satisfactory references. Applicants must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
