You will join the Modelling and Simulation Centre (MaSC), which brings together leading numerical modelling expertise in all areas of engineering and materials science. MaSC is centre based in the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering, pioneering the development, validation and dissemination of modelling and simulation tools and techniques for complex engineering systems across a range of size and timescales.

You will develop a coupled model for calculation of fracture toughness of metallic components that takes into account concurrently the two possible mechanisms for damage initiation and crack propagation – via rupturing of second-phase particles leading to cleavage fracture, and via decohesion of such particles leading to ductile crack advance by void growth and coalescence. The challenge will be to progress the existing local approaches to cleavage and ductile fracture, so that the coupled model is applicable to different crack geometries (stress triaxiality conditions) and across temperatures (changing deformation properties). The development and the validation of the model will be supported by experimental data on damage initiators, spatial damage evolution and fracture toughness values across temperatures and triaxiality conditions, provided by the funding companies, EDF and NNL, and from previous research in Manchester. You will be expected to report four-monthly on the progress of the work to the funding companies.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering (MACE) is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School received a Bronze Award in 2013 for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women for this post. Appointment will always be made on merit. For further information, please visit http://www.mace.manchester.ac.uk/about-us/athena-swan/.
