Salary: £45,400 - £54,880 per annum
Campus: South Kensington
The UK MED-BIO project is part of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Medical Informatics initiative. It provides state-of-the-art capability and capacity supporting rapid advances in omics, e-Health and medical bioinformatics leading to major advances in understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of chronic disease.
Underpinning the project is a major medical bioinformatics data centre at Imperial College with access for its partners and other academic researchers through secure, managed portals. The system offers multi-petabyte scale tiered storage accessed by multiple computer systems including dedicated servers, and HPC.
We are seeking a highly motivated systems administrator with extensive experience of large scale data systems in a linux-based research environment who is seeking a challenging role in a group developing, implementing and maintaining the storage, data management infrastructure, and servers for a large diverse bio-medical computer resource. You will join a small established operations group of systems administrators and bioinformaticians, within the College’s Bioinformatics Data Science group that works on all aspects of the multi-petabyte Med-Bio storage system and the associated servers.
You will have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, and ideally, a further degree in a numerical or computational discipline. Extensive experience is required in setting up and maintaining/administering/provisioning disk-based large-scale object storage computer storage systems in a linux-based environment to provision and maintain our GPFS OR in linux server installation, configuration and maintenance in a large multiuser environment including an Open Nebula virtualisation cluster, and provision the MED-BIO software and user environment. Depending on your skill profile, the post will focus more on either storage or server/software aspects. Previous experience using ICINGA, NAGIOS or similar for monitoring complex environments is also required. You will need to show previous experience of team working in an IT environment and possess highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to balance demands.
Experience of operating high-performance parallel file system technologies -particularly GPFS, object-based storage, tape-based backup and archiving systems, management systems such as iRODS, and virtualization concept and technology, particularly Open Nebula are desirable; as is strong practical ability in scripting languages (e.g. Python, Perl, Bash).
This post is full time and fixed term until 31 March 2019 in the first instance.
The College cannot normally apply for a Certificate of Sponsorship for this post under Tier 2 of the UKVI’s Points Based System. Any candidate, who is considering applying for this position and requires sponsorship, must ensure that they are able to obtain permission to work in the UK through an appropriate immigration route.
