Detail information about job Staff Officer. Terms and conditions vacancy

  • Broad and fast paced role with a mix of admin, governance and strategy advice
  • Join us as we evolve into a modern, cloud-based shared IT platform
  • Flexible and/or part-time hours negotiable between 30-40 hours per week

What you will do

As a Staff Officer in the newly established Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) you will join a busy team responsible for supporting and enabling effective ICT governance as well as ensuring that the CIS Branch strategy is clearly articulated and aligned to the strategic objectives of NZDF.

In this varied and fast paced role you will need to be able to juggle a lot of balls in order to provide administration and secretariat support to governance activities and meetings while at the same time staying up to date with the direction and strategic objectives of the NZDF, as well as key trends and issues in the ICT industry.

Your work may also include researching and advising on specific opportunities and topics of relevance to the strategic direction of CIS Branch. So an ability to attend meetings on behalf of the CIO and then summarise issues and opportunities as well as work with the Staff Officer to the CIO on solutions to those issues is critical.

Note that we are open to negotiating flexible and/or part-time hours between 30-40 hours per week.

Who we are

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand. As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations. We enable the interaction between our people, our partners and the broader defence community, at home and abroad.

CIS Branch is totally unique, we are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. We work locally and globally to provide solutions to military-specific challenges and to ensure Defence information can flow efficiently and securely between New Zealand and our Allies.

Why us

Let’s just say we’re not your typical corporate IT department.

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments
  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes
  • We’re here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them

It’s also the perfect time to join us. We are in the process of transforming our culture and the way we work so we truly understand our customers and partner with them strategically.

By joining us as we evolve to a modern, shared information and technology platform, you will be part of a culture that endears trust, empowers decision-making and respects people.

What we need

This could suit you if you are currently an Office Manager, Business Manager, Business Advisor, Project Coordinator, Executive Assistant or similar with an understanding of the business of ICT.

You’ll enjoy this role if you are hungry to learn and you love working at pace.  At the same time, however, you will need to be customer-focused and capable of building sound working relationships across NZDF.

In addition you will need:

  • Professional written communication skills including the ability to draft correspondence on behalf of the CIO,  write reports, memorandums and other documents as required by CIS branch leadership
  • The ability to communicate with and represent the OCIO with a wide range of audiences on complex issues
  • The ability to research and understand the root causes of problems/issues, summarise them succinctly and bring them to the table with potential solutions
  • The ability to participate in, and when required facilitate, governance committee meetings
  • Experience building and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships and effective networks across and within organisations
  • The ability to provide secretariat support (e.g. agenda preparation, minute and action taking etc.).

Please note that you must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required.

Come and be part of the change. What we do matters!
