Our State Highway Networks are monitored and operated by a team of highly skilled specialist Operators, using a robust traffic management system, with the aim of providing timely and accurate travel information across the Lower North Island.


Using data from different sources, including CCTV, Police and Emergency Services, and Contractors; traffic flow can be efficiently managed and road users kept informed.


With CCTV cameras strategically placed across state highways and motorways, TOC Operators are able to zoom in and manipulate cameras to monitor the network for both Planned and Unplanned Incidents.


Unplanned incidents, like crashes and accidents require effective liaison, with emergency services and contractors. Additionally, planned incidents, like events and holidays, will require effective planning of detours and lane closures.


Road Users are kept informed via Variable Message Signs and updates on various social media platforms.


To be considered for this full-time role within this transport operations centre, it is important that you are able to display the following skills and attributes:

  • Self-managing and motivated
  • Analytical and able to work with complex information
  • Solutions focused - able to think on your feet and work under pressure
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to pick up new and complex systems with ease


This is a full-time position, averaging 80 hours over a fortnight.  You will be working to a roster which is developed several weeks in advance. 

Please note:

  • This team operates across shifts in a 24/7 environment. The ability to work nights, weekends, and public holidays is required.
  • You must have a clear criminal history and able to pass a Police and Ministry of Justice check.
  • A full and clean driver’s license is required along with your own car to get to and from work
  • Computer skill testing is required as part of the recruitment process
