In order to create a world class experience for our customers we need to gain a deeper understanding of the motivations and behaviors of our customers. That is why we are setting up a new customer analytics team, to provide customer reporting, analytics and insights. As Data Engineer you will be responsible for expanding and optimising our data to ensure insights for our analytics team.

In this role you will…

  • Assemble large, complex data sets while ensuring agreed security standards are met by third party suppliers.
  • Build analytics tools utilising data pipelines to provide actionable insights.
  • Improving the accuracy of our data at source.
  • Identify, design and implement process improvement.
  • Develop standards and guidelines for data and data management.
  • Work closely with the Data Manager to prioritise workloads and ensure that key data sets are being developed for Z which meet our target objective of being a World Class Kiwi company.

You will have…

  • 5+ years of BI or data warehouse experience.
  • Proven experience in dimensional modelling, preferable Kimball based.
  • Strong understanding of the importance of data conformity, and a proven skillset in managing disparate data sources from across the enterprise.
  • Proven experience in building relationships across business
  • Proven skills in (preferably with certification):
    • SQL Server
      • Integration Services
      • Analysis Services
      • Reporting Services
      • Security and data management
    • Cloud Technologies and big data tools

Role purpose

Z is on a journey to gain a deep understanding of customer behaviour and motivations and to deliver a world class customer experience. To achieve this we need to capture, manage and govern customer data at an enterprise level.

We are looking for a savvy Data Engineer to join our ICT team to expand and optimise our data, ensuring data is to provide insights to our analytics teams. Working closely with the Data Solutions Manager and Customer Data teams you will be optimizing data flows and collection for cross functional teams. The ideal candidate is experienced in understanding business needs and wrangling the data to optimise data systems and build them from the ground up. The Data Engineer will support our software developers, data architect, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimizing or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives.

This role will require someone with demonstrated experience with the principles of good data governance and strong technical knowledge of data strategies.

Role responsibilities


  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
  • Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
  • Accountable for the maintaining the data sets to meet our security and privacy policies.
  • Working with third parties and suppliers to ensure data meets our agreed standards of accuracy and availability

Skills & Experience


Experience Required
4+ years of BI or datawarehouse experience

6+ years of ICT experience in a technical role

Proven experience in building relationships across ICT and Business units

Building data sets for analytics use

Qualifications Required
Degree in Computer Science, IT or Data

Or equivalent experience in a ICT or business role
