The Role

Youth Horizons is looking for a Alternate Family Teacher to work in our Hamilton House in Waikato. The hours of work are mainly evening shift work, weekend work and sleepovers.

Hamilton House is a community based residential service catering for young males (10 - 17 years old) who have been referred by Oranga Tamariki (Ministry for Children). The home is an evidence-based service using the Teaching Family Model (TFM) of practice. TFM is effective in helping young people to learn new ways of behaviour before being transitioned back to whanau and / or longer term care in the community.

If you are someone who supports a strength based approach when working with youth, are not punitive in your interactions and have what it takes to motivate and support young people, we are keen to hear from you.

As a Alternate Family Teacher you will work within a team to assist youths to develop and practice skills including, behaviour management, communication, coping and problem solving skills.

Role requirements

  • Work collaboratively as part of a team, including supporting the other practitioners and house parents.
  • Support and empower the young people within the home to undertake their daily activities, meet their goals and change their behaviour through the application of the Teaching Family Model (TFM).
  • Assist with our holiday/day programmes.
  • Assist with the day to day running of the home.
  • Carry out sleepovers in the home.
  • Work one day each weekend.

About You

  • You will have passion to enhance the lives of young people at risk.
  • Be culturally aware and willing to be a part of a bi-cultural journey.
  • Previous experience working with young people from a range of cultures.
  • The ability to build strong relationships with peers and stakeholders.
  • Have a full and clean New Zealand driver's licence.
  • You will have model appropriate behaviours, display Youth Horizon values and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to provide nurture and structure and to be a strong positive adult role model.
  • A clear Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Police vetting check.

Youth Horizons Offers

  • Fun loving family/whanau environment.
  • 24/7 on-call support backed up by the continual support of the programme Practice Leader.
  • Full induction and on-going developmental training in the TFM model.

We're a regional team within a wider national organisation and are passionate about what we do. If you are looking for a challenge, have right attitude, are a team player and want to work for an organisation that is making a difference in the lives of at-risk children and young people - please apply!
