The Challenge

DSM Nutritional Products NZ - Animal Nutrition is seeking an experienced Leading Hand to take firm control of the second shift in our Animal Nutrition Factory. This role supports and reports directly to the Department Shift Supervisor.

  • As the Leading Hand, you will have the ability to responsibly lead a team of operators in the absence of the Department Shift Supervisor, being an advocate for best practice with regards to Safety and Quality.
  • You will be able to work independently, take initiative and show ownership with regards to the process and products. 
  • The Leading Hand will work on a rotating shift pattern with their team, alternating between day and afternoon shift. The career manager for this role is the Production Manager.

 

The Position

The role of Leading Hand reports to the Shift Supervisor and is their deputy/2nd in command in a production team, within the Animal Nutrition and Health division on site. The Leading hand is part of a production team and will work according to the shift schedule.

The Leading hand works closely together with the Shift Supervisor as well as the wider production team and is responsible for operating and cleaning equipment in a safe and efficient manner and take on team leading tasks whenever the Shift supervisor is not directly available. The purpose of this position is to accomplish the production and site objectives by ensuring all goods manufactured meet the quality requirements of our customers and the company, are produced with maximum efficiency and in accordance with production scheduling. This is done while adhering to the SHE requirements and expected behaviors on site. In addition, the purpose of this role is to be deputy to the Shift Supervisor and take the leading role whenever they are not around, on leave or engaged in other site activities.

 

Accountabilities

  • SHE (Safety, Health and Environment)
    • Follow safe work practices / rules and practice safe behaviours always, having regard to their own and others safety
    • Operate equipment safely and effectively for production processing in line with company policy and procedures
  • Quality
    • Ensure that hygiene, safety standards, procedures and plant housekeeping are maintained and practiced always.
    • Help resolve deviations to standard by way of participating in Root Cause Analysis sessions.
  • Production and Maintenance
    • Help Set-up the production equipment correctly during startup and job changes.
    • Undertake and complete production activities so that production schedules and worksheet specifications are met.
    • Ensure all work areas, machinery and equipment are cleaned and maintained as specified in the quality and safety procedures.
    • First line troubleshooting on process and equipment issues.
  • Communication and Documentation
    • Communicate and co-ordinate necessary information to appropriate shift/ department staff to ensure effective operations.
    • Read, understand and execute work instructions relevant to the role and activities.
    • Support in the development of new procedures relevant to the operational processes.
    • Attend relevant production or site meetings as deputy to the Department Shift Supervisor.
  • People and Process Performance
    • Support in the induction and training of production employees for the specific duties required of them.
    • Provide assistance to operators in their assigned responsibilities.
    • Recommend process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and safety.

 

The Ideal

Knowledge and educational level

  • School Certificate, Level 2 NCEA or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge and application of Industrial and Personal safety behaviors.
  • Understanding of Safety and Health requirements.
  • Understanding of Quality requirements and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Good level of computer skills and Minimum Literacy and Numeracy level 3.

Required level of experiences

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment involved with Food Safety, the HACCP system and GMP preferred.
  • Experience with People Management preferred.
  • Good feel for cultural and hierarchical sensitivity.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and logical problem-solving skills.
  • Previous experience with computer operations and experience with SAP preferred.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • A Forklift F-endorsement to your NZ driver’s license preferred.
