About the company

Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) is an iconic Canterbury based organisation steeped in a history which tracks back to the settlement of Christchurch. With a focus firmly on the future, these are exciting times for LPC with major infrastructure developments in full swing and a strategy focused on innovation, optimisation and business growth.

The Marine Team at LPC is a core operating function that ensures the safe, cost effective and optimised piloting and mooring of all vessels into, out of and at this busy, commercial port. This function provides a vital service to the customers of LPC and is a major contributor to commercial performance for the company. LPC needs a talented people leader to take on this role and lead this function – could this be you?

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Marine Manager takes overall accountability for delivering on the operational goals and longer term strategic objectives of the Marine function. In doing this, the Marine Manager will:

  • Lead a diverse and experienced team including pilots, engineers and tug masters – ensuring all team members are engaged, supported and achieving their individual and team goals;
  • Model behaviours and lead a culture focused on safety in all facets of operational delivery;
  • Drive operational performance; ensuring optimisation of resources, timeliness of piloting, mooring and service delivery and safety of people, vessels and cargo at all time;
  • Develop and implement an asset management strategy that delivers on the long-term, medium-term and immediate objectives of the Marine function; specifically, in terms of ensuring 24/7 availability of all tugs and launches;
  • Contribute as a high performing member of the Operations Team; supporting overall planning and execution of operational initiatives

This role needs a true leader who can foster a culture of real engagement while driving operational performance. Is this you?

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have extensive leadership experience; ideally within unionised workforces and you will have a proactive style that sees you easily engage with your team, lead through inspiration and cause people to reach their true potential. Leadership is the key here!

You will ideally have had exposure to the maritime industry; possibly having started your career in the Navy or within broader shipping contexts and you will bring a passion for working in this context. Structured, deadline focused and a true problem solver; people will describe you as the “calm in a storm” and someone who just gets thing done.

If you are a seasoned leader and are looking for a new opportunity that will challenge and excite you; then we want to hear from you.
