This role is situated in a highly visible State Government Department that employs thousands of staff with a wide range of responsibilities and skill sets in order to ensure that it operates effectively and efficiently.

This contract role will provide legal advice and legislative subject matter expertise to a range of stakeholders to support the effective resolution of reviews, complaints and investigations and where required represent the Information Commissioner or the Privacy Commissioner in courts and tribunals and/or brief external legal counsel.
Work collegiately with the Senior Investigation and Review Officers and other IPC staff under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Director, to draft legal responses, maintain and implement legal precedent and knowledge databases and performance and quality control systems, processes and procedures.

Key Accountabilities
    • Provide high quality legal advice and legislative subject matter expertise to the Assistant Director, Legal Counsel and Regulatory Advice, managers and staff to support the effective resolution of reviews, complaints and investigations. This includes the provision of accurate, timely and practical legal advice as well as undertaking critical legal analysis to identify, develop and implement practical solutions to legal issues.
    • Represent the Information Commissioner or the Privacy Commissioner in courts and tribunals and/or brief external legal counsel when required.
    • Conduct research and analysis to support the functions and objectives of the IPC and draft high quality submissions, advices, briefs, reports and other correspondence to meet internal and external requirements.
    • Liaise, communicate and negotiate with other IPC business units and local, state and Commonwealth government agencies in order to increase awareness of and compliance with the legislation administered by the IPC.
    • Represent the IPC in committees, meetings and other forums to provide informed responses to issues and promote the role, functions, objectives and achievements of the IPC.
    • Work collegiately with the Senior Investigation and Review Officers under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Director, Legal Counsel and Regulatory Advice to develop, maintain and implement legal precedent and knowledge databases and performance and quality control systems, processes and procedures to support the IPC in meeting its service delivery objectives.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies, policies and procedures to support stakeholder compliance with the legislation administered by the IPC.
Essential requirements
  • Qualification in law, and must be admitted (or eligible to be admitted), and must hold a practising certificate (or eligible to hold a practising certificate)
  • Demonstrated experience in administrative law and advocacy including judicial and quasi-judicial fora and a capacity to distill and present complex legal issues
  • Demonstrated case management experience and administering legislation and investigations, with a sound understanding of investigation principles, process and practices
