Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) is a body corporate constituted by the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 charged with providing strategic direction and leadership in the development of greyhound racing in NSW.  It is the peak body of the sport and is responsible for ensuring the competitiveness and long-term commercial viability of greyhound racing for the benefit of participants, business partners and the community.

The Legal Officer/ Paralegal provides quality legal and administrative services to support the operations of GRNSW, and facilitates compliance with all relevant legislation, regulation, policies, procedures and rules.  

The role will provide high level and responsive legal and administrative support, including the following:

  • Undertake legal research in relation to various requests and enquiries, including determining relevant legislative / regulatory provisions, policies, procedures and rules precedents and case law
  • Conduct due diligence, reviews and analyses of legal documents including agreements, reports, memorandums of understanding and constitutions; as well as in relation to commercial matters
  • Prepare and draft preliminary legal documents including correspondence, briefing / case notes, briefs of evidence, corporate governance documents, agreements, subpoenas, affidavits, orders and reports,  in areas such as corporate transactions, contracts, intellectual property, policies and procedures, real property transactions and matters arising under various legislation (e.g. Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009, Public Interest Disclosures Act 1994)
  • Provide routine and/or supervised legal advice and services to internal clients
  • Liaise with and answer queries from clients, stakeholders, Board members, suppliers, courts/ tribunals, government bodies and other parties as required by the General Counsel
  • Develop and maintain effective recordkeeping systems to facilitate efficient access to relevant information and records, including file records, precedents, court/tribunal decisions, contracts, legislation and policies; monitor legislative and/or regulatory timelines to ensure GRNSW complies with its obligations
  • Assist with the development and simplification of standard precedents and templates
  • Monitor, review and improve office systems and processes to deliver high level administrative support to the Legal and Policy team and to ensure consistency with GRNSW’s policies, procedures and business practices
  • Provide efficient administrative support to the role supervisor and/or other senior legal staff and assist with the day-to-day management of legal, compliance, governance and risk matters to ensure client deadlines and expectations are met, for example preparation of legal files and briefs, copying, filing, diary management, meeting coordination, travel bookings and record keeping.

Skills and Experience

  • Legal qualifications from an Australian university (or equivalent) eligible to hold a current practising certificate in NSW.
  • At least 1 year legal experience in Australia
  • Excellent research, investigative, analytical and problem-solving skills, including knowledge of research techniques and legal principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills appropriate to a range of stakeholders, including an ability to work positively with other professionals.
  • Technical excellence with an ability to accurately apply legal procedures and principles
  • Demonstrated high level organisational, administrative and computer skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgement and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Understanding of GRNSW’s regulatory environment, including the ability to quickly gain knowledge of its legislation, rules and core business.
