About the role

Due to an exciting period of growth, we have an excellent new opportunity for an experienced Legal Counsel to support our Utility Services business in Melbourne. The primary purpose of this position is to provide commercially astute legal advice and services to this primary business sector of Ventia (including relevant subsidiary companies) as a qualified solicitor and in doing so to act in accordance with the Ventia’s internal protocols and Business Standard.

The Legal team, although reporting centrally, has been structured to ensure that the legal professionals are a considered and embedded part of decision making by the business. This approach fosters timely, accurate, commercially-focused advice whilst maintaining the necessary autonomy and governance.

About you

  • You are a highly experienced senior solicitor with experience in a large corporate legal practice and/or in house legal experience in within a major business (services / engineering industry desirable)
  • You will hold a Bachelor of Law (LLB or equivalent) and be qualified to practice as a solicitor in the relevant jurisdiction - holding a current practicing certificate in that jurisdiction.
  • Background in Construction and/or Utilities Law
  • Excellent communication skills - ability to communicate complex concepts clearly
  • Excellent legal drafting skills
  • Verbal reasoning skills - ability to interpret the precise meaning of written documents such as contracts, legislation, case decisions and articulate to senior managers of the business
  • Risk assessment and risk mitigation skills - ability to identify risks/issues and offer practical commercially appropriate solutions to manage/ mitigate risks
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong experience developed from working on tenders, shaping the bid, tender process and ongoing management
