Purpose of Position

POSTGRADUATE FELLOW IN INTENSIVE CARE AND EDUCATION AND SIMULATION

This Postgraduate Fellow position will participate in the ICU senior medical roster and facilitate and take a lead in ICU medical education, particularly DETECT, ICU RISC and BASIC and assist in the development of transition to new ICU simulations.  The position will be 0.5 clinical and 0.5 education and simulation with 20 clinical weeks per annum, of which 10 weeks will be on call (including weekends).  The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience and training modern education and simulation methods and conduct research in this field.

The clinical duties of the Postgraduate Fellow will be across 36 critical care beds in our new ICU including cardiothoracic patients.  The Intensive Care Unit is a Level 6 NSWHD service with approved training for core, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgical and Trauma ICU.  It will also include provision of support to a remote rural ICU through formal networks.

The St George Hospital Clinical Skills Centre is a state of the art simulation centre with high fidelity simulation facilities and capability for blended learning programmes for multidisciplinary teams.  The supervisors are all Harvard Medical Simulation trained.

The St George Hospital  ICU Postgraduate Fellow in education and simulation position is an exciting opportunity to gain experience and training in education and simulation at the same time as honing your clinical ICU skills. The focus is on ICU education and multidisciplinary simulations for ICU teams along with early detection of the deteriorating patient through the DETECT program. You will facilitate and take a lead in ICU medical education and assist in the development and refinement of blended learning programs. Become part of a dynamic team developing a comprehensive ICU education system including education research. The position will be a one year appointmnt at 0.5 clinical and 0.5 education and simulation. Access to formal training in simulation and education mentorship are provided. Selection Criteria

1. MBBS or equivalent and currently registered or eligible for registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). 2. Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand or an equivalent. 3. Demonstrated experience in working in the tertiary Intensive Care unit. 4. Demonstrated interest and excellence in education and simulation. 5. Demonstrated good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills and to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. 6. Demonstrated ability to perform relevant Intensive Care related procedures (airway management skills, vascular access, invasive monitoring etc). 7. Completion of EMST and BASIC courses or equivalent. 8. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.
