Purpose of Position

  • Provide and support the development and planning of Orthopaedic Surgical services to patients of the Clarence Health Service. Assist the Director Medical Services in service planning and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide Specialist Orthopaedic Services to inpatients, outpatients and emergency patients consistent with the role delineation of the Hospitals/Facilities within the Clarence Health Service. This will include participation in an after-hours on-call roster and provision of a fracture clinic service.
  • Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice consistent with the teaching role of the Clarence Health Service. Provide supervision and teaching for Junior Medical Officers and pre-vocational trainees. Participate in the scheduled teaching activities of the hospital including the grand rounds.
  • Participate in risk management and quality programs of the Northern NSW Local Health District including reporting of IIMS, Root Cause Analysis. Conduct Morbidity and Mortality audits of the Orthopaedic work within the health service at least once every two months. Participate in the Medical Quality Meetings when they are scheduled.  
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, NSW Health Policies and Northern NSW LHD policies and procedures.
  • Ensure timely completion of medical records for patients and follow up on any investigations requested. 
  • Utilise appropriate information systems to enable informed decision making and care planning including results reporting and theatre management systems.
  • Stay complaint with organisation WH&S practices and actively promote a culture of safety in the workplace. Comply with and implement the NSW Health Risk identification, management, monitoring, and reporting of risks within the Health Service.
  • Participate in an annual Performance Review. Undertake educational or training programs mandated by the LHD including compliance with Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) educational modules.

Selection Criteria

Eligible for full registration with the Australian Health Professionals Regulation Authority. Must be registered before commencement. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with subspecialist recognition in Orthopaedic Surgery and/or Specialist recognition under the Health Insurance Act 1973 or the Staff Specialist (State) Award. Registrars nearing completion of training are invited to apply. Demonstrated experience in elective and acute orthopaedic surgery, utilising contemporary practices. Willingness to operate at Grafton Base Hospital and Maclean District Hospital, in accordance with the Hospitals' Role delineation and ability to respond within a reasonable timeframe to emergencies at Grafton Base Hospital to perform emergency surgery, as rostered. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a team and provide leadership to the team. Demonstrated committment to continuing education and teaching. Evidence of participation in and the willingness to continue participation in quality improvement activities, including Peer review activities. Evidence of effective use of resources, for example: selection of cost effective protheses, whilst maintaining safe and appropriate care.
