Consultant General Surgeon Purpose of Position The Consultant General Surgeon will provide effective specialist General Surgical services to the patients of Bathurst, the surrounding catchment area and Western NSW Local Health District and participate in an appropriate and equitable on-call roster for the Hospital. They will provide education, supervision and support to junior medical and staff registrars and will engage in quality assurance activities both at the Departmental and Hospital level and additionally as asked by Medical Administration and Facility General Manager e.g. when an interdepartmental case review is required. We are seeking an energetic and collaborative General Surgeon who may bring subspecialty interests, not essential but welcomed, to complement our 3 other resident General Surgeons, to provide day-to-day clinical management of general surgical patients at Bathurst Hospital. The Consultant General Surgeon will provide effective specialist General Surgical services to the patients of Bathurst, the surrounding areas and Western NSW Local Health District and participate in an appropriate and equitable on-call roster for the hospital. They will provide education, supervision and support to junior medical staff and registrars and will engage in quality assurance activities both at the Departmental and hospital level and additionally as asked by Medical Administration & facility General Manager e.g. when an interdepartmental case review is required. Substantial general surgical experience over the last 2 years is required with demonstrated skills in trauma and abdominal emergencies. Should be capable of Independent Specialist Surgery in a Regional setting. Experience doing general surgical locums is welcome. As a member of the Department of Surgery and the wider clinical community, the consultant would participate in ongoing service developments that contribute to the improvement of clinical services at the hospital. The Consultant Surgeon would participate in the day-to-day teaching of registrars, JMOs and medical students. The Consultant Surgeon is responsible to the Department Head of Surgery, and to the General Manager through the Director of Medical Services. Contact: Dr Neil Meulman on telephone number 02 6332 3779 or mobile 0417 688 782 or email [email protected] Selection Criteria 1) Australian citizen or Permanent Resident, or eligible for sponsorship for visa to work in Australia. 2) Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons or equivalent and /or other Specialist recognition as provide for under the Health Insurance Act 1973 and current registration with the Medical Board of Australia. 3) Demonstrated technical and professional competence in Surgery, including substantial general Surgical experience over the last 2 years with demonstrated skills in trauma and abdominal surgery and possibly subspecialty interest. 4) Capable of Independent Specialist Surgery in a Regional setting. 5) Demonstrated participation in and commitment to quality improvement and accreditation activities relevant to the specialty. 6) Demonstrated commitment to and participation in teaching of other health professionals, including Staff and Doctors in training. 7) Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team, and commitment to equitable participation in a Hospital on-call roster. 8) Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to Rural Specialist practice.
