About the Opportunity

Fixed-term 12 month part-time to full-time (30.4 hours to 76 per fortnight) HP3 level opportunities within Mater Pathology’s Chemical Pathology department have become available for Scientists to join the team. New and recent graduates and experienced scientists are encouraged to apply. These are continuous shift worker roles with shifts to be rotated through day, evening and overnight shifts. The successful applicant/s will require flexibility to participate in the continuous shift and weekend rosters as required after an initial training period. Whilst this position is sited in Chemical Pathology, an ability to work multi-disciplined shifts in Pathology may be required in the future.

Salary range: $32.51 - $49.13 (Health Practitioner Employee Level 3) per hour plus superannuation

Mater Pathology is the oldest pathology service in the Brisbane and surrounding areas. Initially established and supervised by the Sisters of Mercy in 1919, Mater Pathology has grown into a multi-faceted and technologically advanced laboratory service serving patients, doctors and hospitals. The service invests all profits back into patient care and is part of Mater Misericordiae Limited.

Mater Pathology is proud of its history but also is recognised for its experience in highly complex pathology. The service is delivered by dedicated staff that understand healthcare such as our highly skilled specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, laboratory assistants, collection phlebotomists, couriers and other support personnel that ensure you get the correct result on time.

Our collection centres are located in over 20 suburbs supporting local communities. In addition, Mater Pathology also offers a 24 hour collection service out of the South Brisbane Mater Adults Hospital for patient convenience.

What you’ll be doing

The purpose of these roles is to apply independent scientific judgement and knowledge of quality control processes in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the accurate and timely verification and validation of test results. The roles will be primarily focussed in the high-throughput General Chemistry/ Immunoassay area but this may change in the future.

About you

To be successful in these roles you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent. The qualification must include clinical units in Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology.
  • An understanding of pre-analytical and analytical interferences in General Chemistry and Immunoassay testing
  • Well-developed “bench” skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Operational and/or scientific clinical laboratory experience is highly desirable
  • An ability, after initial training, to work as a continuous shift worker across all shifts as rostered

Applicants will also need to have ability to problem solve routine technical issues, participate positively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, and work efficiently while also prioritising workflow in a high workload environment.

Applicants must define how many shifts per fortnight they desire in their applications.
