NCIRS is advertising for a Research Officer ? Policy Support

The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) at Kids Research, The Children?s Hospital at Westmead, is the leading body in Australia working in applying research to inform immunisation policy development, best clinical practice, surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases and vaccine safety, and evaluation of immunisation services. NCIRS has national and international recognition in this arena.

NCIRS is looking for a dynamic individual who enjoys working in a collaborative team environment, to contribute to the Centre?s role in supporting the development of national immunisation policies and practice guidelines.

This position is particularly suitable for a Master of Public Health (or equivalent) graduate who has some experience in systematic appraisal of biomedical literature, scientific writing, statistical analysis of epidemiological data, and/or knowledge translation for development of health policies or clinical practice guidelines, especially in communicable disease control or other population health contexts.

What you'll be doing
The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (NCIRS) is the leading body in Australia working in the area of policy and planning for immunisation services in Australia and to support initiatives in the surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, including disease surveillance, vaccine coverage and immunisation adverse events. This work is funded through agreements with the Australian and the New South Wales governments. NCIRS also conducts epidemiologic and clinical research funded by diverse sources. NCIRS staff includes persons with expertise in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, paediatrics, internal medicine, infectious diseases, epidemiology and quantitative and qualitative survey methods. 

The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children?s Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health, The Children?s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School, the School of Public Health and the Marie Bashir Institute of the University of Sydney.

Research and surveillance activities include surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, vaccination coverage and adverse events, vaccine safety and program evaluations and social research. NCIRS also provides technical support for the Australian Government Department of Health  on immunisation-related matters and the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, including production of The Australian Immunisation Handbook


  1. BSc or BAppSc or equivalent, with MPH or MAE or relevant postgraduate qualification or a relevant doctoral qualification from a recognised tertiary institution; or equivalent degree of other relevant scholarly training; or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  2. Demonstrated highly developed organisational and communication skills, including both written and verbal skills, and ability to work in a team environment
  3. Experience in the use of relevant computer packages including Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) and EndNote (or equivalent)
  4. Proven ability to undertake and complete research projects in a timely manner and demonstrated ability in scientific writing in English, particularly through a primary responsibility for preparing high quality technical reports for scientific or policy advisory groups, and/or articles for publication in scientific journals
  5. Demonstrated familiarity with the biomedical literature and relevant bibliographic databases (eg Medline, Cochrane Library), with experience in the systematic review process (eg NHMRC or Cochrane reviews) desirable
  6. Demonstrated ability in data analysis using Excel and/or other statistical computer programs such as SPSS, Stata, SAS
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in infectious disease in general and vaccine preventable diseases in particular
  8. Demonstrated understanding of the Australian health services and Australian immunisation programs
