This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a leading role at a major Sydney teaching hospital supporting a Microbiology pathology laboratory. You will also be involved in working across NSW Health Pathology, providing leadership and input to a changing and evolving organisation.

Appointment of a Senior Hospital Scientist eligible to be appointed as a Principal Hospital Scientist. Appointment of a Principal Hospital Scientist is subject to an independent credentialing process.

Microbiology at Liverpool Hospital is an interesting and challenging location that provides 24/7 pathology services to facilities within the South Western Sydney LHD.

We operate more than 60 laboratories and around 200 collection centres across NSW and
conduct over 60 million tests per annum. Our network of pathologists are supported by
scientists, technicians and support staff who quickly and accurately assess samples so clinical teams can make the best possible treatment decisions for patients. Our Forensic &
Analytical Science Service provides independent, objective analysis to the NSW criminal
and coronial justice systems.

What you'll be doing
Responsible for managing the laboratory to provide an efficient and effective service across operational management, compliance management, financial planning and reporting, department performance monitoring and reporting, corporate risk management, human resources management and strategic planning.
 

The position is responsible for managing operational activities with the Microbiology Laboratory in Liverpool providing scientific leadership, playing a key role in developing frameworks and implementing changes and assisting in developing/implementing strategic business plans to ensure optimal outcomes within budget both locally

and across the NSW Health Pathology.

 

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand Policy Directive PD2011_005 Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination against specified diseases. All new recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. New recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

An eligibility list will be created for future permanent full time / part time, temporary and casual vacancies.

This position is a permanent position. To be eligible for permanent appointment to a position in NSW Health, you must have an Australian citizenship or permanent Australian residency.

Please note: A person who is not an Australian citizen or a permanent resident is only eligible for temporary employment for a period not longer than the duration of their current visa or a period not shorter than the duration of the advertised position.


  1. A Hospital Scientist who has been appointed as such and holds a post graduate degree in science at least equivalent to the degree of Master of Science or PhD of an approved university, or such other qualifications deemed by the employer to be equivalent and who has had not less than ten years post graduate experience in an appropriate scientific field
  2. Proven leadership and operational management skills and experience including budget management, staff and resource management and maintenance of professional standards and accreditation within organisational funding and performance frameworks
  3. Demonstrated experience with the implementation of quality improvement and risk management including an understanding of the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements in healthcare
  4. Demonstrated experience in change management and use of financial, statistical, human resources and management data to proactively improve laboratory efficiency and effectiveness
  5. Demonstrated strategic thinking and professional networks in a specialty of pathology relevant to the laboratory, and understanding of the role and function of public laboratories within the Australian and NSW health systems
  6. Advanced knowledge and operating competency with Laboratory Information Systems, Microsoft Office applications and Quality Management Systems and proven data analysis skills
  7. Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service with a high level of interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and interact professionally with a diverse range of people at all levels.
  8. Extensive demonstrated knowledge and experience in Clinical Microbiology.
