Guardianship in NSW is governed by the Guardianship Act 1987. The Public Guardian is the statutory official who leads the Office of the Public Guardian. He represents adults with disability who have impaired decision-making ability and are the subject of a guardianship order. Guardianship orders are made by the Guardianship Division of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, or Supreme Court.

 

The Office of the Public Guardian promotes the rights and interests of people with disabilities through the practice of guardianship, advocacy and education.

 

About the role

 

As the Senior Client Information Officer you will work as part of a small team to:

·    design, deliver, and evaluate education and consultation programs to improve understanding of the Guardianship Act 1987. These programs target the represented person, people significant to the person, government and not government agencies, and community groups

·    provide support to private and enduring guardians in their role as decisions-makers and advocates for the people they represent

·    respond to public inquiries about the role, function and practice of the Office of the Public Guardian and related matters. This includes providing information about: enduring guardianship and other planning ahead tools; decision making support for people with disability, and; alternatives to guardianship

·    investigate complaints from represented people and stakeholder about staff of the Office of the Public Guardian

·    provide administrative support to the Assistant Public Guardian about reviews of decisions made by guardianship staff.

 

About you

 

To be successful in the role you will need to:

·   understand the needs, rights and issues relating to people with impaired decision-making ability

·   be able to effectively engage a diverse range of represented people and other stakeholders

·   work collaboratively in a small and supportive team

·   manage your workload and competing priorities

·   understand and apply the legislative and policy context in the core areas of your work. This includes understanding the Guardianship Act 1987.

·   communicate complex concepts and ideas, in writing and verbally, to a broad range of groups and individuals.

·   have experience in developing accessible information in various formats that deal with complex matters.

 

Essential requirements

 

·    Degree in social, legal, behavioural sciences or related discipline or equivalent experience

·    Proven fieldwork experience in an area of disability including individual and systemic advocacy skills

·    Excellent knowledge of disability issues and a comprehensive understanding and commitment to the principles of the Guardianship Act, 1987

·    Available to travel throughout NSW to deliver training
