About the Organisation

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is a self-funded Federal Government agency responsible for the conservation and promotion of former Defence and special Federal Government lands around Sydney Harbour.  Our sites include: Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, Woolwich Dock, HMAS Platypus, Headland Park including Mosman, Georges Heights and Chowder Bay precincts, Macquarie Lightstation and North Head.

The Harbour Trust wants to create something truly special for these lands – to enhance the harbour and leave a lasting legacy for Sydney.  The lands provide an amazing opportunity; they contain historic buildings and areas of pristine natural vegetation, magnificent views of the harbour and a record of our city’s Aboriginal, maritime and defence heritage.  The cultural heritage of the lands will be conserved, the environment protected and maximum public access provided.

About the Opportunity

Sydney Harbour Federation Trust now has an exciting opportunity for a full-time ranger to join their team, working across various Harbour Trust sites.  You must have the ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends, at all Harbour Trust sites listed above.

Reporting to the Head Ranger, you will be a public facing ambassador for the Harbour Trust, ensuring the safety and security of the members of the public who visit these iconic sites and Harbour Trust parkland and property.

Some of your more specific duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Providing advice to the public and tenants concerning Harbour Trust regulations and enforcing these when necessary;
  • Undertaking regular patrols and inspections of all Harbour Trust buildings, parklands, tracks and roadways;
  • Preparing reports on site any site irregularities and issues to public safety that may require attention;
  • Responding and providing assistance with any emergency situation;
  • Coordinating, directing and liaising with Harbour Trust security contractors;
  • Providing support on traffic management issues; and
  • Maintaining an accurate diary of all duties, recording all incidents and preparing written reports to the Head Ranger.

About You

The successful candidate will have experience in customer facing roles, ideally within a hospitality, travel or tourism context.  Given the nature of the role, a high level of personal fitness is desirable.

You will have the ability to quickly obtain a thorough understanding of the Harbour Trust’s Regulations and knowledge and experience with Sydney Harbour and its environment would be an advantage.  Knowledge of local, state and federal legislation and awareness of legislation regarding heritage listed assets would also be highly regarded.

Most importantly, you will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to interact in a confident and positive way with colleagues and members of the public.  You will respond well to high pressure situations and be able to negotiate satisfactory outcomes when solving problems or facing conflict situations.

Knowledge and experience in Work Health and Safety and the ability to implement Government policies on Workplace Diversity will be essential in this role.

Although not essential, the following would be highly regarded:

  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one)
  • White Card (Construction)
  • RSA
  • Boat Licence

A current driver’s licence is also required.

A Federal Government Australian Nationally Co-ordinated Criminal History Check will be conducted before commencement.

This position is offered on a full time basis for an initial term of three years.  Applications should be forwarded to [email protected].  Applications close on the 27th July 2018. Only short listed candidates will be contacted.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is an equal opportunities employer and we encourage applications from indigenous Australians, people from non-English speaking backgrounds and people with disabilities. Information about the Trust can be found at www.harbourtrust.gov.au
