The organisation is Australia’s international law enforcement and policing representative with posts in more than 30 countries.

The AFP is seeking dynamic, motivated and experienced individuals to join its Senior Executive team.

Reporting directly to a National Manager, the successful candidates will be expected to lead a Branch responsible for an Operational, National Security or Operations Support.

This position will be based in the AFP Headquarters, Canberra.  The AFP will consider applications from candidates who reside outside the Canberra region, subject to a willingness to commute as required. Any decision with respect to location will be subject to agreement with the Commissioner.

The AFP business model explicitly links capability and capacity with the conduct of operations in order to maximise the use of technology, specialisation of resources and identify interdependencies. To ensure the AFP maintains its ability to lead and respond to ongoing changes in the operational and criminal environment, leadership skills across a diverse range of areas are required.

To be a contender for these positions, you will need outstanding values-based leadership, communication, networking and negotiation abilities. Commander positions require the exercise of policing powers as well as leadership experience in a relevant policing function. Relevant tertiary qualifications will be favourably regarded.

All SES roles in the AFP involve:

  • managing and implementing change;
  • developing and maintaining co-operative working relationships with senior internal and

external stakeholders;

  • nurturing a wide range of internal and external contacts, networks and strategic alliances with other

     agencies; and

  • exercising delegations in accordance with legislation.

The role of Commander is responsible for leading a sworn policing function to deliver on national

security or crime priorities. Commanders are responsible for aligning organisational capability and capacity to ensure operational outcomes are maximised through harnessing technology and specialist resources and identifying interdependencies and future needs.

Successful candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a minimum security clearance at Top Secret (NV2) level.

IMPORTANT - For this application process, applicants are required to provide a de-identified two-page pitch for the panel to consider. Your resume does not require de-identification as this will not be provided to the panel for the purposes of shortlisting candidates for interview. This means applicants must not include any identifiers on the two-page pitch (e.g. name, email, specific information about previous managers/ supervisors or personalised comments from your performance feedback documentation or any information that could allow a panel member to identify a candidate). Candidates are also reminded that the content of applications, resumes/CVs etc. is to be limited to ‘unclassified material’.

Before applying, please obtain selection documentation from Gillian Beaumont Recruitment vacancies page on (Ref #3756).

If, after reading the selection documentation, you require further information please contact Jonathan Beaumont on (02) 6126 4500.
