Overview
TEQSA’s Legal Group is responsible for services including:
- providing strategic and technically sound advice to TEQSA’s statutory officers and staff on all legal issues arising in TEQSA’s operations
- managing claims by or against TEQSA, including litigation and administrative review
- coordinating TEQSA’s response to complaints about TEQSA, including investigations by the Commonwealth Ombudsman
- ensuring that appropriate controls are in place so TEQSA complies with relevant legal obligations, including overseeing relevant TEQSA processes and providing training to TEQSA’s staff
- managing TEQSA’s policy on legal matters including intellectual property, freedom of information and privacy matters
- ensuring that TEQSA’s delegations and other instruments are legally effective and maintaining a register of those instruments
- maintaining a system for managing TEQSA’s legal advice to ensure TEQSA retains the benefit of the legal advice provided
- managing arrangements with external legal service providers as required
- developing and overseeing the implementation of TEQSA’s internal quality assurance framework.
Position duties
The Lawyer will, under general direction:
- prepare legal advice and information on legal issues relevant to TEQSA, including the interpretation and application of legislation and case law
- contribute to the development and implementation of TEQSA’s internal quality assurance framework
- prepare responses to requests from staff and stakeholders
- perform research and analysis of legal issues
- provide administrative and clerical support for TEQSA’s Legal Team, including document management activities associated with external review matters
- work cooperatively with members of the Legal Team and other TEQSA staff to contribute to the management and strategic planning of TEQSA’s work
- other duties as required.
