You are an accomplished rail professional with a strong background in delivery of rail projects – ideally of a significant size and likely from within a consulting engineering or contractor environment. You have a strong entrepreneurial drive and are excited by the opportunity to establish and grow a new division within a well-regarded global business.

Our client has a strong reputation for engineering, project delivery and asset management in Australia and around the world, with a focus on the mining, resources and energy sectors. After establishing a new joint-venture with another international business, they are now looking to take advantage of the significant opportunities in the heavy rail sector across Australia. On that basis they have created this position, which will oversee the development of this portfolio nationally.

Initial key deliverables will include:

• Develop an understanding of the business and the general landscape, processes and procedures
• Investigate and assess existing skillset in the company i.e. do they have existing services/expertise that can provide leverage into the heavy rail space, or can be transferred
• Undertake a mapping of the Heavy Rail sector in Australia and the opportunities available – Help the executive to understand this by providing a business case on the best approach to entering this sector – what issues are challenging? What are the key relationships that ensure success? Who are the key players? Etc.
• Meet with any past and present clients, networks and identify business opportunities and a business development strategy
• Within 12 months have secured first projects in the sector and have started to build internal capability

The ideal candidate:

• Extensive experience in the heavy rail sector – this could be from consulting, contracting, or possibly client side or public sector
• Strong financial and commercial acumen – will have full P&L responsibility for this division as it develops
• Project Management experience in the sector (need to understand full Lifecyle of heavy rail projects, ideally on a larger scale - $100m +)
• Strong senior leadership and business development experience; able to build a team from the ground up
• Good reputation and brand within the market place
• Entrepreneurial style
• Proactive and driven to succeed
• Able to travel – expected that this person will be interstate 25% of their time
