Our business
Based close to Sydney CBD, SDA Structures is an award-winning structural design consultancy with 20 years' experience. We have established ourselves as one of the leading medium-sized consultants in Sydney, with our work spanning across Australia and beyond.
Working predominately with architects, we approach each project sympathetically to the original design and endeavor to provide a structure which enables and enhances their vision.
Our primary focus is residential projects; however, SDA also undertakes installation art projects, developer-driven projects, large-scale commercial projects (for example IKEA stores), and pro-bono projects in developing countries.
The role
We are looking for graduate/junior level structural engineers with 0-5 years' experience and an understanding of designing in all common building materials (steel, concrete, masonry, timber and glass) to join our dynamic, Sydney-based team.
To be successful, you will need:
- Degree-level education to BEng or higher
- Willingness to learn new skills quickly
- Excellent communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Experience of Spacegass or Microstran and SLABS
- Confidence to seek assistance when needed
- Ability to prioritise your work to ensure critical timeframes are met
- A current drivers licence as driving to sites will be required
- Knowledge of programs such as TEDDS, RAPT and Strand is helpful but not essential - these can be learnt in the office
What you can expect from us
An exciting and professional work environment. Our office is collaborative and open. Engineers at all levels are encouraged to pose questions to others freely to facilitate knowledge sharing and help progress designs.
As a junior level engineer, you will initially work alongside a more senior colleague who will act as a mentor and help develop your career in structural engineering. You can expect to work on a range of projects, communicating with architects and clients regularly.
A typical design process for a project will involve following it through from preliminary scheme to detailed design, including ongoing coordination with the architect.
The construction process will involve inspections to ensure compliance with the design, and often involves close collaboration with the architect and builder to incorporate changes to the design due to unexpected site conditions or architectural amendments.
We offer industry leading rates of pay and a structured, performance based, reward package.
Benefits and perks
We offer a variety of benefits and perks:
- Regular technical talks on specific issues met on projects, often with guest speakers presenting a commercial product or technical issue of relevance

- Social activities
- Chance to work alongside some of the best architects in Sydney on high-profile projects.
- Site inspections during construction at a range of amazing projects and locations. Previous projects include Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), The Glasshouse cultural centre (Port Macquarie) and Sails in the Desert Resort (Ayers Rock).
