About Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre

Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is located in Wacol, Queensland, 20 kilometres south-west of Brisbane.

Arthur Gorrie has been continually managed by GEO on behalf of Queensland Corrective Services since opening in 1992. It is Queensland’s largest correctional centre.

Arthur Gorrie's primary role is to safely and securely house up to 1287 adult male remand prisoners for the period leading up to, and during, their trial. As a consequence, a high number of prisoners move into and out of Arthur Gorrie every day, and the average length of stay can be very short.


About the Opportunity 

Reporting to the Finance and Administration Manager this role will see you being responsible for the maintenance function of Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre on a day-to-day basis in accordance with contractual maintenance requirements of Queensland Corrective Services and the agreed standards. You will also be responsible for coordinating daily job requests.

You will primarily be responsible for:

  • Establishing and maintaining Preventative, Corrective, Routine and Breakdown maintenance schedules relating to the correctional environment by liaising with centre’s maintenance contractor – Building Asset Services (BAS), Honeywell and GEO contractors.
  • Using MEX (Computerised Maintenance Management Software or similar) to manage, assign and follow up all Preventative, Corrective, Routine and Breakdown requests.
  • Identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring and revising relevant policies, standards and systems, to ensure efficient and effective maintenance programs are delivered.
  • Preparing and submitting monthly reports, to the Finance and Administration Manager, outlining the activities, results and progress made regarding issues relating to maintenance.
  • Liaising with BAS and Finance and Administration manager in relation to Intentional Damage.
  • Establishing and maintaining an Asset Management Program for Assets less than $5000.00.
  • Coordinating procurement and distributions of white goods for centre usage.
  • Coordinating all repairs where possible to Assets less the $5000.00.
  • Carrying out and or coordinating all internal maintenance requests that are allocated to status Type 16, being the responsibility of GEO.
  • Maintaining procedures for the purchase of parts, services, consumables and plant equipment for the centre.
  • Conducting Quarterly Stock takes of the centres Assets as required by QCS.
  • Organising Test and Tag as per legislative and contractual requirements.
  • Coordinating general clean ups in areas as required.
  • Coordinating site induction for contractors, when required regarding working inside a correctional environment.
  • Establishing and maintaing procedures for the actioning of requests for Minor Capital Works and Capital Works in consultation with Finance and Administration Manager.
  • Maintaining liaison with QCS, BAS and organisations and taking an active role in the activities of such groups to ensure effective delivery of services to the centre for such groups.
  • Co-ordinating the duties of the groundsman, to ensure a high standard of grounds.
  • Liaising with the roster clerk regarding the allocation of staff required to escort contractors.
  • Conducting periodic checks of tools and implements held in the garden shed.
  • Liaising with company contractors to ensure compliance with contracts and continuity of services to the centre.
  • Being familiar, compliant or having the ability to acquire knowledge about:
    • relevant legislation to this role which includes, but is not limited to: Corrective Services Act and Work Health and Safety Act;
    • any other legislation that applies to the management of a correctional facility in Queensland;
    • concepts and requirements that encourage fair and equitable workplaces, for examples anti-discrimination, equal opportunity and gender equality; and
    • the Centre’s compliance with Quality Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management and Food Safety Program standards.

Your Skills & Experience

To succeed in this role you will possess the following:

  • Proven ability to identify, develop, plan and oversee the implementation of appropriate maintenance and policies and procedures.
  • Trade qualification required.
  • Proven knowledge and ability to carry out or supervise general repair works.
  • Ability to provide advice, prepare and present detailed reports on maintenance matters.
  • Demonstrate a high level of communication skills, including the ability to negotiate and interact with people from varying social backgrounds.
  • Ability to write comprehensive and accurate reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to initiate new ideas and apply creative solutions to the resolution of problems.
  • Ability to work within a correctional setting, which will involve direct contact with prisoners.
  • Valid and current full Australian driver’s licence.
  • Satisfactory completion of a National Criminal History Check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Work outside of ordinary business hours may be required on occasion.
