The RUPA Board is seeking a full time CEO to continue to advance the collective interests of professional players and the game of Rugby in Australia.

Based in Sydney, the CEO will lead the organisation through its next negotiation and representation phase, whilst managing the complex day-to-day business operations of RUPA and relationships with a diverse set of industry stakeholders.

About the Role

RUPA was incorporated in October 1995 in direct response to the professionalism of rugby. Our key focus is on protecting the workplace standards of its members, preparing players for their post-playing lives, and promoting the interests of the players and the game.

Our professional and academy membership comprises players from the:

  • Australian Wallabies and Wallaroos;
  • Men's and Women's Australian Sevens teams;
  • Four Australian Super Rugby teams;
  • Seven Australian NRC teams;
  • Five Australian Super-W teams; and
  • Western Force (World Series Rugby)

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to drive and implement a mid-term strategy for RUPA through to and beyond 2020, which will include the implementation of a new CBA and strictly managing compliance, playing a vocal and valued role in Super Rugby competition re-design, supporting players and arrangements around the 2019 RWC & 2020 Olympic Games and best preparing the players and the organisation to negotiate the next CBA in 2020.

Beyond these major projects, primary responsibilities of the RUPA CEO include delivering:

  • Outstanding organisational and people leadership
  • Extensive stakeholder engagement, consultation and communication
  • High profile negotiation, bargaining and player advocacy
  • Strategic planning and implementation
  • Player-centric program development and execution
  • Project management and event delivery
  • Effective financial management and investment strategy

The CEO reports to the RUPA Board. A salary package commensurate with the high standing of this position will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • 10+ years of proven leadership and administrative experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship skills
  • Past exposure to industrial and employment law
  • Track record of successful high level negotiation outcomes
  • Capacity to distil extensive stakeholder feedback into coherent platforms and policies
  • Understanding of Rugby in Australia and the general sporting marketplace
  • Strong proficiency in managing with technology
  • Aptitude for working with a Board and understanding of governance principles

Desirable

  • Understanding of digital and macro-sports industry trends
  • Knowledge of player associations and their strategic importance to the industry
  • Connection with Rugby in Australia
  • Masters level tertiary qualification in related field
