Connecting Families is a community services organization founded in 2013 to attend to millions of Australians annually, arranging assistance, support and counsel for families in need. Our entire team is committed to meeting the needs of all the families we assist and support.
Purpose:
To give a young person (male or female between the ages of 8 and 18) in need of social and recreational development and emotional support the companionship of an adult to supplement the work of parents, teachers, counselors, social workers and other social services and education professionals.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The mentor will be assigned to a mentee and will be responsible for meeting with the mentee on a weekly basis. The Mentor may be asked to work on certain aspects of the mentee's development. The Mentor will work closely with key people/agencies through phone contact, personal conferences and group meetings to understand the mentee and help facilitate activities to help the child. The Mentor will serve as an example/role model to demonstrate that mentee can give, and should receive, respect (and will make an occasional mistake). Self-realization and improved self-esteem for the young person are important goals of the relationship. It should be emphasized that the mentor in no way replaces the parent or the family's social worker. Rather, he or she will present themselves as a Big Brother or Big Sister in the mentee's life. A written report will be produced by the Mentor to be provided to the social worker.
Activities may include:
- Play individual, two-person, and team sports
- Tie a knot—such as a bowline, square knot, taut-line, and figure eight, among others
- Camping activities
- Teaching the mentee about how to deal with car mechanical issues
- Teaching the mentee about health and well being

Requirements/Qualifications:
A person who is interested in becoming a mentor must have a car. Experience in teaching, human services or related fields is helpful. Experience as a parent or extensive experience with young people is also helpful.
The Mentor should have the ability to accept and relate to youth who may not share the mentor's lifestyle and values. The Mentor should respect the mentee's right to self-determination and independence. This respect is an essential element in the relationship. The Mentor should exhibit a great deal of common sense, intelligence, friendliness, maturity, sensitivity and responsibility.
Location:
The mentoring program will be across NSW. Before making any match, Connecting Families will consider location, interests, skills, background, knowledge and temperament of both the mentee and the Mentor.
Availabilities:
Weekends only (at this point in time)
