G4S manage Mount Gambier Prison on behalf of the Department for Correctional Services in South Australia. Mount Gambier Prison is a 493 bed facility for sentenced and remand prisoners. It is currently going through a further expansion and when completed will be a 660 bed facility for prisoners.
We currently have a vacancy for an Aboriginal Liaison Officer. Working as part of a collaborative team, the Aboriginal Liaison Officer is the support and point of referral for Aboriginal offenders upon entering, during and exiting custody.
Key duties and responsibilities include;
- Attending initial interviews with Aboriginal offenders to ensure they understand the conditions and obligations are fully understood
- Improving and maintaining positive relationships with the prisoners, other service providers and relevant government departments
- Being a link between the Aboriginal prisoners and other staff at the Mount Gambier Prison, relevant community agencies and government departments
- Assisting upon release to ensure they are well supported when they enter the community
- Providing education to the wider Mount Gambier Prison staff to increase respect and understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; to ensure a culturally appropriate experience whilst in the prison
- Contribute to the implementation of the recommendations from the Royal Commission for Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
Ideally you would possess the following skills, experience and qualifications;
- Well organised
- Ability to work with others
- Possess good communication and negotiation skills
- Cultural awareness, experience and sensitivity when working with Aboriginal people
